Amitabh Bachchan Receives Dada Saheb Phalke Award

  • Amitabh Bachchan was conferred the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke and the actor received the honour from President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 77-year-old actor was conferred the highest honour of the film industry for his outstanding contribution to cinema. The award comprises a Golden Lotus and a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh. Wife Jaya and son Abhishek Bachchan had accompanied the actor for the prestigious ceremony.

Maximum Age Limit for Chief of Defence Staff Put at 65, Government Amends Rules

  • The defence ministry amended rules to allow the Chief of Defence Staff to serve up to a maximum age limit of 65 years.
  • The changes have been made in the services rules of the Army, Navy and the Indian Air Force for extension of retirement age of the Chief of Defence Staff to a maximum of 65 years if a service chief is appointed to the post.
  • However, the tenure of the CDS is yet to be announced.

UK Honours for Clive Lloyd, Elton John

  • Knighthoods for director Sam Mendes and cricket legend Clive Lloyd were announced in the British New Year honours list, which includes singer-composer Elton John and a number of Indian-origin achievers described as extraordinary.
  • The royal honours list is released twice a year, on New Year's Eve and on Queen Elizabeth's official birthday on the second Saturday of June.
  • While John has been made a Companion of Honour, Lloyd and award-winning director Mendes were named for knighthoods.
  • The list includes linguist Aditi Lahiri and musician Jasvir Kaur Rababan.

UNICEF-2019 Award for Swachh Bharat Implementation

  • Kamareddy district of Telangana secured the United Nations International Children's and Education Fund (Unicef)-2019 Award. The district won the award for the effective implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission in water sanitation.
  • Kamareddy district was on top in the country among other districts in construction of individual sanitary lavatories, swachh darpan wall paintings, swachh survekshan, swachh sundar shouchalay and many other activities.

Dr. Santosh G. Honavar conferred with the AAO

  • Dr. Santosh G. Honavar, India's ophthalmologist was conferred with the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) highest award Life Achievement honour. He is the first Indian chosen for the honour. The award was presented to Dr. Honavar at the annual meeting held in San Francisco.
  • American Academy of Ophthalmology is the world's largest association of eye specialists. The mission of the American Academy of Ophthalmology is to protect sight and empower lives by serving as an advocate for patients. It is founded in 1896 and headquartered in San Francisco, USA, American Academy of Ophthalmology have 32,000 professional members.

Tamil Nadu Tops Good Governance Index Among Big States.

  • The southern state of Tamil Nadu  bagged the top position in the composite ranking for good governance index (GGI), followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka, according to data provided by the Personnel Ministry.
  • Chhattisgarh has got the fourth position, followed by Andhra Pradesh (fifth), Gujarat (sixth), Haryana (seventh) and Kerala at the eight rank.
  • Madhya Pradesh is at the ninth rank, West Bengal at the tenth position, followed by Telangana (11th), Rajasthan (12th), Punjab (13th), Orissa (14th), Bihar (15th), Goa (16th), Uttar Pradesh (17th) and Jharkhand at eighteen position in the big states category.
  • The states and union territories have been divided into three groups -- big states, north-east and hill states, and union territories -- for the rankings based on certain indicators separately.
  • In the north-east and hill category, Himachal Pradesh topped the ranking followed by Uttarakhand, Tripura, Mizoram, Sikkim, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir (now divided into two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh), Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Among the union territories, Pondicherry got the first position, followed by Chandigarh, Delhi, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep.

Army Design Bureau Excellence Award

  • Major Anoop Mishra was awarded Army Design Bureau Excellence Award by the Army Chief for indigenously developing Sarvatra bulletproof jacket. The jacket made by Anoop Mishra can provide protection from sniper rifle bullets. The project was launched after there was an increase in the number of sniper incidents in the lines on Line of Control (LoC) and Kashmir valley.
  • Earlier in October, the Indian Army was supplied 40,000 indigenous bulletproof jackets for its troops carrying out anti-terror operations in the Kashmir valley. These bulletproof jackets can withstand hardcore steel ammunition fired from an AK-47 rifle.

Tamil Isai Sangam Honours Musicians

  • Violin maestro A. Kanniyakumari was conferred the title 'Isai Peraringnar' and musician A. Balasubramaniya Odhuvar the 'Pann Isai Peraringar' award at the annual Tamil Isai Festival organised by Tamil Isai Sangam.
  • President of Tamil Isai Sangam P. R. Gokulakrishnan and honorary secretary of the Sangam A.C. Muthiah were present on the occasion.
