Dr. Nitya Anand, Man Who Discovered India's First Oral Contraceptive Pill 'Saheli', Passes Away

  • Dr. Nitya Anand who made the first oral contraceptive pill 'Saheli' in India, passed away at the age of 99. Dr. Anand was in charge of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) from 1974 to 1984. He was part of CDRI since it started in 1951. He guided 100 PhD students, wrote over 400 papers, and had more than 130 patents.
  • Dr. Anand made Saheli, a unique birth control pill, used once a week and without steroids or hormones. It was introduced in 1986 by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In 2016, Saheli became part of India's National Family Programme. It is still the only pill of its kind in the world.
  • Dr. Anand was awarded the Padma Shri award.

Former Union Minister Dhawan Dies

  • Senior politician and former Union Minister Harmohan Dhawan passed away at the age of 83.
  • Elected to the Lok Sabha from Chandigarh in 1989 on a Samajwadi Janata Party ticket, Dhawan became the Union Civil Aviation Minister in Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar's cabinet.
  • In 1990, Dhawan switched to the Congress, but did not stay there for long due to differences with former Union minister Pawan Bansal. He floated his own party, Chandigarh Vikas Manch, and contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Chandigarh, but lost.
  • Again in 2007, he moved to the Bahajun Samaj Party and contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls from Chandigarh unsuccessfully. The next year, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • After remaining associated with the saffron party for nearly a decade, he joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2019 and fought the Lok Sabha elections from Chandigarh for the fourth time, losing again.

  • Madison Marsh, a lieutenant in the US Air Force and a master's student in the public policy program at the Harvard Kennedy School, emerged victorious at the 2024 Miss America pageant. Representing Colorado, Marsh made history as the first-ever active-duty Air Force officer to hold the national title.

Malayalam Music Director K. J. Joy Passes Away

  • Malayalam music director K. J. Joy passed away in Chennai. He was 77 years old. Joy, is known as the first 'techno musician' in the Malayalam film music world for his use of instruments like the keyboard in the 1970s.
  • K. J. Joy, born in 1946 at Nellikunnu in Thrissur district of Kerala, composed music for more than two hundred films during his decades-long career in the film industry. He made his debut in Malayalam cinema in 1975 and since then he was the architect of many songs that captivated and enthralled people.
