William Anders, Apollo 8 Astronaut Dies in Plane Crash

  • Retired astronaut William Anders, one of the first three humans to orbit the moon, who captured the "Earthrise" photo during NASA's Apollo 8 mission, died when the small plane, he was piloting, crashed in Washington state.
  • A U.S. Naval Academy graduate and Air Force pilot, Anders joined NASA in 1963 as a member of the third group of astronauts. He did not go into space until December 1968, when Apollo 8 lifted off on the first crewed mission to leave Earth orbit and travel 240,000 miles (386,000 km) to the moon. Anders was the 'rookie' on the crew, alongside Frank Borman, the mission commander, and James Lovell, who had flown with Borman on Gemini 7 in 1965 and later commanded the ill-fated Apollo 13.
  • Anders took the famous 'Earthrise' photo that showed our world with the lunar horizon in the foreground.
  • The three astronauts were greeted as national heroes when they splashed down three days later in the Pacific Ocean and were feted as Time magazine's 'Men of the Year'.

Media Baron Ramoji Rao Passes Away

  • Prominent media baron Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, chairman of Ramoji Group and Padma Vibhushan awardee, passed away at the age of 87.
  • Born on November 16, 1936, Ramoji Rao established a massive business empire, including Margadarsi Chit Funds, Eenadu Telugu daily, ETV network of television channels, film production company Usha Kiran Movies and the world's largest film production facility – Ramoji Film City (RFC).
  • He also owns Dolphin group of hotels, Kalanjali Saree Showrooms, Priya Foods and Mayuri Film Distributors.

Justice U. L. Bhat, Former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh and Gauhati High Courts Passes Away

  • Justice U. L. Bhat, former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh and Gauhati High Courts passed away.
  • He was selected as Munsif in 1961 by the Kerala Public Service Commission but the State government refused to appoint him in government service for political reasons.
  • In 1968, High Court of Kerala selected him for the post of District and Sessions Judge and was appointed as the District and Sessions Judge by the State Government in 1970 and served in that capacity till 1980.
  • He was also appointed as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and functioned as such till December, 1993.
  • He was transferred as Chief Justice of High Court of Madhya Pradesh. He retired in the month of October, 1995. After his retirement, he was appointed as President, Customs, Excise and Gold Control Appellate Tribunal (CEGAT), New Delhi, where he served for three years.

  • Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, who was in the UK for a concert series, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by a leading Indian diaspora students' organisation for his worldwide impact in the field of music.
  • The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK conferred Nigam with the fellowship at Wembley Arena in London. It was presented by veteran British Indian Labour MP Virendra Sharma and Professor Rachel Dwyer, Emeritus Professor of Indian Culture at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
  • The Honorary Fellowship, previously conferred upon actoress Shabana Azmi, writer Javed Akhtar and spiritualist Sri Sri Ravi Shankar among others, acknowledges individuals who significantly impact Indian cultural exchange, education, and social improvement on a world stage.
