  • The Indian Navy has equipped its amphibious warfare ship, INS Jalashwa, with indigenously developed combat systems.
  • New images of the warship indicate that it has been installed with the Bharat Electronics Revathi radar in place of the legacy SPS-40 air search radar.
  • The vessel has also received the locally developed Kavach naval decoy launchers, and Indian-made electro-optical (EO) fire control directors for its AK-630M gun mounts.

Pakistan Set to Induct Upgraded JF-17 Fighter Jets

  • The new version of the fighter aircraft jointly developed by China and Pakistan with upgraded fighting capabilities made its maiden flight in December 2019 and the first batch is set to be inducted by Islamabad in 2020.
  • The single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft has been developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China.
  • China agreed to share more advanced technology from the superior J-20 fighter jets with the new JF-17 aircraft.

CDS Seeks Plan on New Air Defence Command

  • India's chief of defence staff General Bipin Rawat, in his first official directive after taking over as CDS, has asked top officials of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) to prepare a proposal to create an Air Defence command to enhance military synergy and optimally utilise the resources of the armed forces.
  • Rawat has set a June 30 deadline for the proposal to be submitted.
  • Air defence refers to protecting military assets from an aerial threat by the enemy. An Air Defence command will include air defence resources of all the three services.
  • As India's first CDS, Rawat is the permanent chairman of the chief of staff's committee, heads the newly formed department of military affairs, and is the single-point military adviser to the Defence Minister.
  • The department of military affairs is expected to form a six-member panel to suggest measures to speed up jointmanship among the three services.

MWF-MK2 Will Feature Next Generation Wide Area Display

  • The latest tender documents issued by India's Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has asked for Expression of Interest to Vendors who can Design, Test, and Supply 2 Medium Weight Fighter (MWF) full mission simulators, which thereby revealed the final cockpit configuration for the upcoming Medium Weight Fighter (MWF) also still called Internally as Tejas Mk2.
  • MWF-Mk2 will be equipped with a high-definition touch screen measuring 50x20cm (20x8in) Wide Area Display (WAD) that will allow a redundant and intelligent presentation of information across its entire length, with the capacity to receive inputs from multitask keys, the touch screen or external interfaces. Using data fusion, it provides the pilot with the information needed and is the main source of flight and mission information in the cockpit.
  • According to 2014 based E-Tender For, the Original plan was to use 2 Multi-Function Displays of size 6x8in and one of 5x5in for the Tejas Mk-2 program but now it seems it has been abandoned. Present LCA-Tejas MK-1 has 3 MFDs in 5x5in along with 2 Smart Standby Display Units (SSDU).
  • Wide Area Display (WAD) is considered as a great step forward in the cockpit display technology with significant operational capability advantages to meet the demands of existing and future threats and also handle high volumes of data, supporting the pilot's ability to select, launch and guide weapons in perfect coordination. Speculation is also that MWF-Mk2 will feature side stick controller like Dassault Rafale and F-35 Lightning II which will help reduce cockpit clutter and won't directly block critical instruments from the pilot's view.

India and Pakistan Exchange List of Nuclear Installations

  • Continuing a 29-year unbroken practice, India and Pakistan exchanged a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral arrangement that prohibits them from attacking each other's atomic facilities.
  • The two countries exchanged the list of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations between India and Pakistan. This was done simultaneously through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.
  • The exchange of the list came amid tense diplomatic ties between the two countries over the Kashmir issue.
  • The agreement was signed on December 31, 1988 and came into force on January 27, 1991.
  • The pact mandates the two countries to inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the agreement on the first of January of every calendar year. This is the 29th consecutive exchange of the list with the first one taking place on January 1, 1992.

Demise of Last MiG-27 Unit Stalls IAF 42-Squadron Plan

  • The retirement of the last squadron of MiG-27s from Indian Air Force (IAF) has further reduced the overall strength of the service, with no immediate fix in sight. On December 27, the last 43 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27MLs ("Flogger Js") in the IAF's arsenal, the remnants of 165 machines license-produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) were mothballed. Their removal from the IAF's order of battle further reduces the number of combat aircraft in the IAF's arsenal, leaving a significantly capability deficit in comparison to aircraft fielded by India's immediate rivals, China and Pakistan.
