INS Tabar Participates in Exercise Konkan 2021

  • The Indian Naval Ship Tabar arrived at Portsmouth in England, to undertake the annual bilateral drill 'Exercise Konkan 2021' between the Indian Navy and Britain's Royal Navy. The bilateral naval exercise Konkan is being held every year since 2004, to enhance the interoperability, synergy and cooperation between both navies. HMS Westminster of the Royal Navy took part from Britain's side.

China's Military Conducts Assault Drills in Seas near Taiwan

  • Chinese fighter jets, anti-submarine aircraft and combat ships conducted assault drills near Taiwan, with the People's Liberation Army saying the exercise was necessary to safeguard China's sovereignty.
  • China has stepped up military exercises around self-ruled Taiwan, which it considers its own territory.
  • According to Eastern Theater Command spokesman Shi Yi, recent U.S.-Taiwan provocations severely violated Chinese sovereignty.
  • The assault drills were held near Taiwan's southwestern and southeastern waters.
  • Taiwan's Defense Ministry said that it had fully grasped and assessed the situation in the sea and air, and was prepared to respond in each respect.

Bharat Dynamics, MBDA Sign Pact to Set Up Facility for Air-to-Air Missile in Telangana

  • Bharat Dynamics and MBDA, a European missile maker are establishing a facility for the final assembly, integration and test (FAIT) of Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) at Bhanur, Telangana.
  • BDL and MBDA, UK signed a licensing agreement to establish the manufacturing facility in the presence of Siddharth Mishra, CMD of BDL at a virtual ceremony.
  • Under the licensing agreement, MBDA will transfer the equipment and knowledge to BDL for establishing the facility. The facility is expected to commence operations by the year 2022-'23.

HAL Inks Contract for Supply of Engines for Tejas Aircraft

  • In an important step that will galvanise India's largest ever domestic arms deal – viz. the acquisition of 83 Tejas Mark 1A fighters for Rs. 45,696 crore – Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has ordered 99 engines worth US $716 million (Rs. 5,375 crores) for the indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA).
  • Since it first flew in January 2001, the Tejas LCA has been powered by a single General Electric (GE) F404-IN20 engine. HAL is continuing with that engine for its first 123 fighters. Support services for the engine will also be provided by GE Aviation, USA, as a part of this project.
  • This is largest ever deal and purchase order placed by HAL for the LCA.

US Army Endorses Tactical Drone Contest to Replace Shadow

  • The U.S. Army has given the green light to proceed into a competition to replace its aging, runway-dependent Shadow unmanned aircraft system with a new tactical drone.
  • The Army Requirements Oversight Council approved requirements for the service's Future Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System, or FTUAS, in the form of an Abbreviated Capabilities Development Document, which will allow the program to move forward into a competitive prototyping phase.
  • The service has spent over a year assessing a variety of new and improved capabilities to replace the Textron-manufactured Shadow.

Russia and China Hold Joint Military Drills

  • Russia's Defense Minister hailed joint war games with China as a sign of increasingly close military cooperation that should expand further.
  • The drills were held in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
  • From the Russian side several Su-30SM fighters and a motorised infantry unit took part in the maneuvers.
  • The exercise marked the first time that Russian troops had taken part in joint drills on the territory of China.

Pakistan Successfully Test-fires Surface-to-Surface Ballistic Missile Ghaznavi

  • Pakistan successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile 'Ghaznavi', which can strike targets up to 290 kilometres.
  • The successful training launch of ballistic missile 'Ghaznavi' was aimed at ensuring operational readiness of Army Strategic Forces Command, besides re-validating technical parameters of the weapon system.
  • The training launch was witnessed by Lt. Gen Muhammad Ali, Commander Army Strategic Forces Command, senior officers from Strategic Plans Division, Army Strategic Forces Command, Scientists and Engineers of the strategic organisations.

India Tests DRDO-developed Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile

  • India has successfully tested the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)-developed Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile off the coast of Odisha's Balasore district.
  • As per report, the missile flew for around 150 km with an indigenous cruise engine.
  • Earlier, in July India had successfully test-fired indigenously developed New Generation Akash Missile (Akash-NG), a Surface to Air Missile defence system in Balasore. It was the second test firing of the 30 km strike-range air defence missile systems in two days.
