Malala's Biopic

  • A biographical film, based on the life of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousufzai, now has a release date. The film is slated for release in January 2020.
  • The Bollywood production, directed by Amjad Khan and produced by Sanjay Singla, is shot in Kashmir.
  • Reem Shaikh plays the role of Malala Yousufzai as the movie also features late Om Puri (his last film), Divya Dutta, Atul Kulkarni, Mukesh Rishi and Pankaj Tripathi.
  • The film is summed up as an account of the courageous journey and struggle of Malala, from her humble upbringing in the Swat Valley to her becoming the champion for free education to all.

Bollywood Collections Cross Rs. 4,000 crore in 2019

  • Revenue from Bollywood films jumped more than 30% to cross the Rs. 4,000 crore-mark this year, notching up a surprise first in the middle of an economic slowdown that has hit multiple bellwether sectors such as automobiles and retail.
  • Trade experts said this is the first time the box office collections in a calendar year have crossed the Rs. 4,000 crore-mark for Bollywood, clearly making for a milestone.
  • A cut in entertainment tax helped boost revenue. Last December, the tax rate for movie tickets priced above Rs. 100 was brought down to 18% from 28%.

Proposed 114-ft Statue of Christ Triggers Row

  • A project to construct what is claimed to be the world's tallest statue of Christ in the Kapalaa Hills of Karnataka's Haarobele village, on a 10-acre plot donated by Congress leader D. K. Shivakumar, has started a political slugfest in the state.
  • On Christmas Day, Shivakumar, who represents the assembly constituency in which the village falls, participated in a ceremony marking the start of work on the statue by offering prayers at the site; the event also showcased a scale model of the proposed 114 feet tall statue carved out of a single rock.

Last Solar Eclipse Of Decade Observed In Parts Of India

  • A partial solar eclipse was visible in India along with several other countries this morning.
  • This was an annular solar eclipse that happens when the Moon covers the sun's centre, leaving the sun's visible outer edges to form a 'ring of fire' or annulus - around the moon.
  • In Delhi, the partial eclipse began at 8.17 AM and ended at 10.56 AM. The total duration of the eclipse was 2 hours and 39 minutes. This was the last solar eclipse of the decade.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched the solar eclipse on the live stream.

Nirmala Sitharaman Releases Postage Stamp To Mark Service Of Dri

  • Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman released a postage stamp to commemorate the service and contribution of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), according to a press release by the government.
  • Anurag Singh Thakur, the minister of state for finance; Ajay Bhushan Pandey, revenue secretary; and Pradipta Kumar Bisoi, secretary, department of posts; were among those present on the occasion. DRI was constituted on December 4, 1957, to function as an apex intelligence agency of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs to counter smuggling.

Lost Painting to go on Sale after 70 Years

  • A painting by L. S. Lowry that was lost to the art world for more than seven decades was unearthed.
  • The 1943 work, entitled 'The Mill, Pendlebury', depicts workers enjoying a day off and children playing cricket.
  • British art expert Nick Orchard of Christie's auction house in London said that there are no recordsof ti, we simply did not know it exsisted.
  • The painting, which Lowry gave away, is expected to fetch between £700,000 and £1m when it goes on sale next month.
  • It has spent the majority of its life in the US, owned by influential medical researcher Leonard D Hamilton, who died earlier this year.
  • Lowry gave the painting to Mr. Hamilton's parents more than 70 years ago, when the family was living in Manchester.

Banksy Unveils Dark Nativity Scene

  • A manger scene juxtaposed against concrete blocks seemingly pierced by a mortar shell: with Christmas looming, the latest Bethlehem offering by secretive artist Banksy appeared in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
  • Dubbed the Scar of Bethlehem, the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph are backlit through damaged concrete, chiseled pockmarks exploding out from a gaping hole in four directions to approximate the Christmas Star.
  • The work is installed at Banksy's Walled-Off Hotel, where all rooms overlook a concrete section of the barrier built by Israel to cut off the occupied West Bank from Israeli territory.
