International Air Connectivity Scheme

  • The International Air Connectivity Scheme (IACS) was launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation with the objective of enhancing air connectivity from India's certain states with some selected international destinations so as to promote socio-economic growth.
  • This newly launched scheme was supported by the State Governments.
  • The State Governments of Manipur, Assam, and Tripura have already identified routes to connect Imphal, Guwahati, and Agartala with international destinations like Dhaka, Bangkok, Yangon, Kathmandu, Mandalay, Hanoi, Chittagong, and Kunming.

Lok Sabha Passes Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, 2022, by voice vote. It seeks to repeal The Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920, and allow the collection, storage and analysis of physical and biological samples, including retina and iris scan of the convicted, arrested and detained persons.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah said its sole objective was to improve the conviction rate in the country, protect the human rights of crores of law-abiding citizens and send a strong message in the society.
  • Mr. Shah said the Bill sought to equip the police with the necessary resources for securing convictions in the court. He said that through the proposed law he was implementing the "T" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for "SMART [Strict and Sensitive, Modern and Mobile, Alert and Accountable, Reliable and Responsive, Techno savvy and Trained]" policing in 2014.

Maharashtra Launches Scheme to Offer Personal Loans for Prisoners

  • Maharashtra government launched a scheme to provide personal loans for prisoners with the aim to improve the living standard of the families of the inmates. The Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank will give loans under the scheme up to Rs. 50,000 at an interest rate of 7 per cent. The scheme will be implemented on a pilot basis at Yerawada Central Jail, Pune.
  • Under the scheme, the loan facility will be decided on the basis of the prisoner, prisoner's loan limit, duration of punishment, possible relief from it, age, estimated annual working day and minimum daily income. The loan will not require a guarantor.

Karnataka's Mid-day Meal Scheme to Bear the Name of Siddaganga Mutt Seer

  • Late Shivakumara Swamiji started the concept of mid-day meal for poor children in institutions run by the Siddaganga mutt of Tumakuru. The mid-day meal scheme of the Karnataka Government for school children would bear the name of late Shivakumara Swamiji who started the concept of mid-day meal for poor children in institutions run by the Siddaganga mutt of Tumakuru.
  • Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced the decision at the jayanthyothsava programme of Shivakumara Swamiji at Siddaganga mutt in Tumakuru in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Ambedkar Young Entrepreneur-Mentor Programme

  • The government is looking to launch a scheme to help aspiring entrepreneurs who belong to SCs and OBCs and are failing to receive venture capital funds (VCF).
  • The name of the proposed scheme is Ambedkar Young Entrepreneur-Mentor programme.
  • As the VCF scheme couldn't make good progress despite being in operation for many years, this programme's need was felt and was devised.
  • Under the VCF scheme, the government provides financial assistance of up to Rs 15 Crore for a time period of a maximum of 6 years to the SC entrepreneurs.
  • This scheme has been developed to help them create their business enterprises, through a "mentorship" programme that will be roping in established managers and industrialists to guide and help them throughout the process. This scheme will also be aiming to build a bridge for all those SC youth of the country who are facing challenges related to funding mobilization and skills despite the social justice and empowerment ministry-run VCF scheme.

Home Ministry Issues Notification for Implementation of Central Service Rules in Chandigarh

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification for implementation of the Central Service Rules for Chandigarh employees. According to the notification, these rules may be called the Union Territory of Chandigarh Employees (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2022, and will come into force from April 1.
  • With this announcement, not only all employees will get the pay scale under the Central service rules but also this will enhance the retirement age from 58 to 60 years. Also, as per the new rules, now all women employees will get child care leave of two years instead of one year.
