Former IMF Chief Christine Lagarde Appointed Head Of European Central Bank

European Union leaders confirmed the appointment of Christine Lagarde as the new chief of the European Central Bank, replacing Mario Draghi from November 1, 2019.
Lagarde's confirmation for a non-renewable term of eight years comes after EU leaders nominated her for the position.

Anup Kumar Singh Appointed As Director-General Of NSG

Senior IPS officer of Gujarat cadre Anup Kumar Singh has been appointed as Director-General of the National Security Guard (NSG).
The appointment of Mr Singh, who is a 1985-batch IPS officer, was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
His appointment will be from the date of joining the post and up to 30th of September, 2020.

SC Orders Transfer Of Assam NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela To MP On Deputation

The Supreme Court ordered the transfer of Assam NRC coordinator, Prateek Hajela, to Madhya Pradesh on deputation.
A bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, however, did not specify the reason, behind transferring Hajela to Madhya Pradesh.
After the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published in Assam, several complaints were filed against Hajela alleging discrepancies in the list.
The list is aimed at segregating Indian citizens living in Assam from those who had illegally entered the state from Bangladesh.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi Recommends Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde As His Successor

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi sent a letter to the Centre recommending Justice S A Bobde, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.
Justice Gogoi, who was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, will demit the office on November 17, 2019.

Gujarat-Cadre IPS officer Anup Kumar Singh is New NSG chief

Senior IPS officer of Gujarat cadre Anup Kumar Singh has been appointed as director general of the National Security Guard (NSG).
The appointment of Singh, a 1985-batch IPS officer, as the DG of the 'black cats commando' force was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The post was lying vacant for over two months after the retirement of Sudeep Lakhtakia, a 1984-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Telangana cadre.

Internationally Acclaimed Bangladeshi Painter Kalidas Dies

Internationally acclaimed Bangladeshi painter Kalidas Karmakar passed away at his residence after suffering a cardiac arrest.
He was 73 and is survived by his two daughters who live in the US.
Karmakar was an adviser of the Gallery Cosmos, an exclusive art space located in the heart of the Dhaka city.
Born on January 10, 1946 in Faridpur district, Kalidas completed his graduation from the Government College of Fine Arts and Crafts in Kolkata in 1969.
A recipient of the Ekushey Padak, the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh, Kalidas's works have been displayed in at least 70 solo exhibitions across the world, including India, US, Japan, Iran and Hong Kong.
Apart from painting, he was also known for his installation work in which he used diverse materials like wood, pottery, brass, utensils and others.

Veteran broadcast journalist P.V. Krishnamoorthy passes away

P.V. Krishnamoorthy, veteran broadcast journalist, died at his residence in Chennai. He was 98.
He is survived by his two sons, including P.K. Balachandran, a Colombo-based journalist.
Born in Yangon, Myanmar, on April 1,1921, he did graduation in English literature there and as a World War II refugee from the Southeast Asian country, he joined External Services Division, All India Radio (AIR), as news reader/announcer in 1944.
He went on to become Station Director of the AIR in Chennai and Kolkata and of the Doordarshan Kendra in New Delhi and Mumbai.
He played a key role in ensuring the country-wide expansion of Radio Rural Forums. As one of the pioneers of Indian television, he was involved in a number of international projects, using the medium of television for education.
He was associated with the production of 1,320 hours of TV programmes on science education in four languages beamed to 2,400 villages.
He was made the first Director General of Doordarshan in 1976 and held the post for three years.
An avid connoisseur of art and music, he was elected as Vice-Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, which presented the Tagore Akademi Ratna (Fellowship) to him in 2012.
A recipient of several honours and awards, he was the first broadcaster to receive the Media Ratna award of the Indian Broadcasters Forum in 2011.

PM Economic Advisory Council Adds Three New Members

Less than a month after the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) was reshuffled and reconstituted, another three new part-time members have been added to the roster.
Economists and finance experts Neelkanth Mishra, Nilesh Shah and V. Anantha Nageswaran have been appointed to the council for a period of two years.
One of the members comes from the 'private sector' – Nilesh Shah is the well-known managing director of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company.
Neelkanth Mishra is the India Equity Strategist for Credit Suisse, while V. Anantha Nageswaran is the dean of IFMR Graduate School of Business and a well-known economic affairs commentator.

Veteran Journalist Kanwar Sain Jolly Passed Away At 86

Veteran journalist Kanwar Sain Jolly passed away following a prolonged illness. He was 86.
Jolly retired as Deputy General Manager of PTI news agency in 1993.
He served at various positions for 40 years at PTI, India's premier news agency.
During his tenure, Jolly was honoured with several awards.
Post his retirement from PTI, he served with various organisations such as KPMG, Pepsi and DuPont.

Shri J.P.S. Chawla Assumes Charge As New Controller General Of Accounts

Shri J.P.S. Chawla assumed charge as the new Controller General of Accounts, Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure.
Government of India has appointed Shri J. P. S. Chawla, 1985-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) Officer as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure with effect from October 15, 2019 on regular basis. Shri J. P. S. Chawla has however been officiating as CGA with effect from September 1, 2019.
Shri Chawla is a bachelor of Engineering (BE) in mechanical engineering from the Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi.
He has worked for four years with the Public Sector Engineering Enterprise, Engineers India Limited (EIL), prior to joining the Civil Services.
During his 34-year career, he has held various cadre posts at different levels in a number of Ministries/Departments with Prasar Bharti, Urban Development, Civil Aviation & Tourism and Agriculture to name a few.
He has also served on deputation with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and served as Director (Finance) in the Indraprastha Power Generation Company Limited (IPGCL) and Pragati Power Limited (PPL).

Jindal Elected as Vice-Chairman Of Worldsteel

The World Steel Association (Worldsteel) has elected Sajjan Jindal, Chairman and Managing Director, JSW Steel, as Vice-Chairman of the association for one year.
It also elected YU Yong, Chairman, HBIS Group Co, as Chairman. Other office bearers include TV Narendran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Tata Steel, and Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, ArcelorMittal.
The World Steel Association is one of the largest industry representation in the world and represents 85 per cent of the world's steel production.

Sourav Ganguly Set To Be New BCCI President

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has been unanimously nominated as the new President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI.
BCCI members have also unanimously selected Jay Shah as Secretary and Arun Dhumal as Treasurer.
All the affiliated units of the BCCI finalised the names of the new office-bearers. A consensus between the state units of BCCI was built for former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly as the front runner for the post of BCCI president.
47-year-old Ganguly was the chairman of the BCCI technical committee and has been a media personality for many years. Jay Shah is the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah while Dhumal is the younger brother of MoS Finance and former BCCI president Anurag Thakur.

I&B Secy Gets Additional Charge

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare has been given the additional charge of Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy in Ministry of Human Resources Development.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the repatriation of Department of School Education and Literacy Secretary Rina Ray to her parent cadre with immediate effect. Rina Ray is an IAS officer of 1984 batch of the UT cadre.
