IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath to leave job and return to Harvard University

  • IMF's Chief Economist Gita Gopinath will leave her job in January next year and return to the prestigious Harvard University, according to the global financial institution.
  • The 49-year-old prominent Indian-American economist had joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the Chief Economist in January 2019.
  • She was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University when she joined the Washington-based global lender.

US Court Rejects Plea filed by Nirav Modi

  • In a major blow to Nirav Modi, a bankruptcy court in the US has rejected a petition of the fugitive diamond merchant and two of his associates, seeking dismissal of fraud allegations against them by the trustee of three companies they previously owned indirectly.
  • The allegations were made in a New York court by Richard Levin, the court appointed trustee of three US corporations--Firestar Diamond, Fantasy Inc and A Jaffe--indirectly owned by 50-year-old Modi previously.
  • Levin had also sought a minimum compensation of USD 15 million for "harm" suffered by the debtors of Nirav Modi and his associates Mihir Bhansali and Ajay Gandhi.

(Defence & strategic studies) from Madras University. He is also a distinguished alumnus of Defence Services Staff College Wellington and College of Defence Management, Secunderabad.

Indo-Canadian Amarjeet Sohi, Ex-cabinet Minister, Elected Mayor of Edmonton

  • Former Indo-Canadian cabinet minister Amarjeet Sohi has been elected mayor of the city of Edmonton in Canada's Alberta. The 57-year-old had opted out of contesting general elections to focus on winning the mayoral polls.
  • A former city bus driver, Sohi served in the City Council before he ran for the Liberal Party from the riding of Edmonton Mill Woods in the 2015 national elections.
  • After narrowly defeating then minister of state Tim Uppal of the Conservative Party, Sohi was appointed a cabinet minister by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Over the next four years, he handled the portfolios of natural resources, and then infrastructure and communities.

Babul Supriyo to Resign from Lok Sabha

  • Former Union minister Babul Supriyo will formally resign as a Lok Sabha MP after being given an appointment in this regard by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. 
  • On September 18, Supriyo, who began his political career with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014, joined West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Yogendra Mohan Gupta, Chairman of the Jagran Group, Passes Away

  • Yogendra Mohan Gupta, chairman and patron of Jagran Group of Publications, passed away in Kanpur after prolonged illness. He was 83.
  • Born on December 14, 1937, Gupta also edited 'Kanchan Prabha' magazine. He is also credited with setting up Lakshmidevi Lalit Kala Akademi in Kanpur.

Coca-Cola India Extends Partnership with Sourav Ganguly for Three Years

  • Beverage major Coca-Cola India extended partnership with former Indian skipper and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly as its ambassador for another three years.
  • Ganguly, now President of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), had earlier signed a pact with Coca-Cola in 2017.
  • The US-based company has a long history of sponsoring major sporting events around the world. It operates in the country through its power brands like Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, ThumsUp, Fanta, among others.
