Dick Fosbury: The Athlete who Developed the 'Fosbury Flop' Dies

Dick Fosbury, the man who revolutionised the high jump in athletics, died at the age of 76.
The American leapt backwards over the bar to win gold at the 1968 Mexico Olympics in a technique which became known as the 'Fosbury Flop' and is used by high jumpers today.
At the Games Fosbury set a then record of 2.24 metres using his method.
Fosbury began experimenting with the 'flop' at school and, encouraged by his coaches, he had all-but perfected it by the time he was in higher education.

Nobel Prize Winner Kenzaburo Oe Passes Away

Kenzaburo Oe, who won Japan its second Nobel Prize for literature with books about pacifism and his disabled son, died at the age of 88.
He wrote about gruesome tales of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and noted how his shock at what he heard may have been his inspiration for becoming a writer.
Several of Oe's books have characters based on Hikari, with one, "A Personal Matter," talking about difficulties accepting the child. The Nobel committee singled out a number of these books when he won the prize in 1994.
A graduate of Tokyo University, where he studied French Literature, Oe began publishing stories while still a student and won the Akutagawa Prize, a career-launching award for new writers, in 1958. A steady stream of work followed, including books on the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
His Nobel Prize was followed by Japan's Order of Culture, but he refused to accept it.

'Rajmata' Sushila Kumari of Erstwhile Bikaner Royal Family Passes Away

A member of the erstwhile Bikaner royal family, "Rajmata" Sushila Kumari, died owing to a prolonged illness. She was 94.
Sushila Kumari's granddaughter and incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Bikaner East, Siddhi Kumari, had paid a visit to her ailing grandmother at the hospital where she was admitted.
After the death of Karni Singh in 1988, Sushila Kumari was looking after the affairs of the erstwhile royal family.

Taliban Governor of Afghan Province Dies in Blast

The Taliban Governor of Afghanistan's Balkh province was killed in a blast at his office. Two people, including Mohammad Dawood Muzammil, the governor of Balkh, were been killed in an explosion.
Muzammil is one of the highest-ranking Taliban officials to be killed in such circumstances since the group returned to power in August 2021.
He was initially appointed as the Governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar where he led the fight against Islamic State jihadists, before being moved to Balkh in 2022.

Savlon India Appoints Sachin Tendulkar as World's First 'Hand Ambassador'

Savlon India, under ITC Limited, appointed Sachin Tendulkar as the world's first 'Hand Ambassador' for its Swasth India Mission, which aims to promote hand hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases. Tendulkar's hand will feature as the chief protagonist in a series of films for the campaign.
ITC's Savlon Swasth India Mission is a program that promotes behavioural change towards hand hygiene through innovative experiences and initiatives. The program was started in 2016 and has been at the forefront of encouraging a culture of hand hygiene in India. Preventable infections place a significant economic burden on the nation, and routine handwashing is one of the most efficient ways to limit their spread.

Actor-filmmaker Satish Kaushik Passes Away

Filmmaker Satish Kaushik passed away at the age of 66. The well known actor was in Delhi for Holi celebrations when he was rushed to the hospital after feeling unwell. He passed away enroute to the Fortis Hospital in Gurugram.
As a film actor, Satish Kaushik was known for his roles as Calendar in the 1987 superhero film, Mr. India, as Pappu Pager in Deewana Mastana (1997), and as Chanu Ahmed in the British film Brick Lane (2007), directed by Sarah Gavron.
Satish Kaushik also won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 1990 for Ram Lakhan and in 1997 for Saajan Chale Sasural.
He penned the dialogues for the 1983 classic "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron", which acquired a cult following over the years. He is known for his comic roles as `Calendar` in "Mr. India", "Pappu Pager" in "Deewana Mastana" among many others. Kaushik also gave sterling performances in other films like "Ram Lakhan" and "Saajan Chale Sasural".

Eminent Odisha Scientist P. K. Jena Passes Away

Noted scientist from Odisha and former Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) P. K. Jena passed away.
Jena, a Padma Shree awardee, had established the science foundation in Odisha. He was the first Odia to become the DG of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and also played a leading role in establishing several institutions in the state.
With his sustained research, he has pioneered new waste management processes as well as metal value recovery processes from industrial and mining wastes.
