Native AI-based Software Created to Safeguard Defence Land from Encroachment

  • The Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE) developed an Artificial Intelligence-based Change Detection Software that can automatically detect unauthorised constructions and encroachments on the defence land using Satellite Imagery, demonstrating once again how technology has benefited the country's defense-related issues. For efficient land management and urban planning, the Institute makes use of the most recent surveying technology, including satellite photography, drone imaging, and geospatial tools.

SBI Updates Renews Agreement with Air Force for Defence Compensation Package

  • State Bank of India (SBI) renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Air Force for the Defence Salary Package (DSP) scheme. Under this scheme, it offers various benefits and features to all serving and retired Air Force personnel and their families.
  • The lender offers extensive benefits to the Air Force personnel such as complimentary personal accidental insurance, air accidental insurance, and additional cover in case of on-duty death (during action). Insurance cover for permanent total disability / partial disability is also available.

Coast Guard Carries out Operation 'Island Watch' along Gujarat Coast

  • Indian Coast Guard carried out Operation 'Island Watch' along Dwarka coast in Gujarat where hovercrafts carried out search of uninhabited islands in vicinity.
  • A hovercraft is an amphibious vehicle that is capable of travelling over land, water, mud, ice, and other surfaces. Hovercrafts can operate at a speed ranging between 30-40 knots (around 50-60 kilometres) per hour.
  • The Indian Coast Guard conducts innumerable real-life operations round the year at sea. It possesses a diverse range of capabilities effective for both surface and air operations. ICG is headed by the Director General Indian Coast Guard (DGICG) from the Coast Guard Headquarters (CGHQ) located at New Delhi.

Indian Navy Commissions First Naval Air Squadron in Visakhapatnam

  • An advanced light helicopter squadron was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam to further bolster its maritime surveillance apparatus.
  • It is the first naval squadron on the eastern seaboard operating the indigenously designed and built advanced light helicopter (ALH) MK III.
  • Indian Naval Air Squadron 324 was commissioned into the Indian Navy in the presence of Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
  • INAS 324 was named "KESTRELS", which are birds of prey and have good sensory capabilities, symbolising the envisaged role of the aircraft and the air squadron.

Defence Minister Dedicates New Manufacturing Facilities to Nation at BDL in Telangana

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL)'s Rs. 44 crore warhead manufacturing facility for making current and futuristic missiles at the Bhanur unit on the city outskirts. He also virtually launched an RF (radio frequency) Seeker facility, which has been established at its Kanchanbagh unit with an investment of Rs. 50 crore.
  • The RF Seeker facility is for production and testing of RF seekers useful for future missiles for target tracking. Seeker is a critical and technology intensive subsystem which will be used in all future missiles for target tracking.

Indian Army Organises Suraksha Manthan-2022

  • The Desert Corps of the Indian Army organised the "Suraksha Manthan 2022", on aspects of border and coastal security at Jodhpur (Rajasthan). The manthan was jointly presided over by Pankaj Kumar Singh, IPS, Director General Border Security Force (BSF), Director General V.S. Pathania, Indian Coast Guard and Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor, General Officer Commanding Desert Corps and attended by serving officers of the Army, BSF and Coast Guard.
  • The finer points of interoperability, operational cohesion, and logistics issues were worked out during the negotiations to improve overall security along the international border and coastal sectors.
  • During the meet, a concrete road plan for achieving the goal of SAMANJASIYA to establish an environment that is conducive to security and capabilities development was agreed upon.

Tejas Malaysia's Top Choice for its New Fighter Jet Plan

  • India's Tejas light combat aircraft emerged as the top choice for Malaysia as the Southeast Asian nation looks at replacing its ageing fleet of fighter jets and the two sides are holding negotiations to firm up the procurement.
  • Malaysia narrowed down on the Indian aircraft notwithstanding the stiff competition from China's JF-17 jet, South Korea's FA-50 and Russia's Mig-35 as well as Yak-130.
  • As part of the package, India offered to set up an MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facility in Malaysia for its Russian-origin Su-30 fighter fleet as it is facing difficulties in procuring spares for the aircraft from Russia in view of western sanctions against Moscow.

DRDO Conducts Successful Maiden Flight of Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator

  • The maiden flight of a new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), an autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator, took off from the Aeronautical Test Range, Chitradurga, Karnataka. The flight which was successful was carried out by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Terming it as a significant step towards self-reliance in strategic defence technologies, an official statement issued by DRDO said that the flight marked a major milestone in terms of proving critical technologies which are used towards the development of future unmanned aircraft.
  • It demonstrated a perfect flight, while operating in a fully autonomous mode. The flight test also included take-off, way point navigation and smooth touchdown.
  • It has been designed and developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, one of the research laboratories of DRDO.
