Chilika Home to 176 Fishing Cats, Finds World's 1st Survey

  • Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, is home to around 176 fishing cats. Touted to be the world's first population estimation of the fishing cat outside the protected area network, the enumeration was carried out by the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) in collaboration with The Fishing Cat Project (TFCP).
  • The total number of the Schedule-I species was found to be in the range of 131-237 during the survey. The estimation was conducted in two phases. Phase-I was conducted in 2021 in the 115 sq km marshland present in the north and north-eastern section of Chilika and its surrounding areas, while Phase II was conducted in 2022 in the Parikuda side along with the coastal islands of Chilika.
  • The cat is a globally threatened species found in marshlands, mangroves, flooded forests and other wetlands. They are found in 10 Asian countries but have remained untraced in Vietnam and Java for more than a decade.

India, Canada Sign MoU for Cooperation on Environmental Protection, Climate Action

  • India and Canada signed an agreement to increase bilateral cooperation on climate action, environmental protection and conservation. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and his Canadian counterpart Steven Guilbeault signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the margins of the Stockholm+50 meeting. The meeting was held to commemorate 50 years of the Stockholm Conference the first United Nations conference on environment.
  • Under the pact, the two countries have agreed to collaborate, exchange information and expertise, and support their respective ambition in a wide range of areas, including increasing renewable energy capacity, decarbonizing heavy industries, reducing plastic pollution, supporting the sound management of chemicals, and ensuring sustainable consumption. Canada has several proven clean technologies which could be of interest to India, such as water and waste management systems, clean hydrogen, smart grids, and energy storage.

Blue Dart Express Signs UNFCCC Climate Neutral Now Pledge

  • Blue Dart signed the 'Climate Neutral Now' (CNN) pledge by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Climate Neutral Now is an Initiative to encourage and support the interested stakeholders to act now in order to achieve a climate neutral world by 2050.
  • Blue Dart, is a part of the Deutsche Post DHL (DPDHL) Group. The Group has adopted a package of measures worth up to 7-billion Euros to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
  • The initiative is a tool to promote voluntary action on climate change. Blue Dart has already invested extensively in remaining a Sustainable Provider of Choice by being the first in the industry to set quantified carbon-reduction targets.

Gujarat Government Inks Agreement with Isha Outreach to Conserve Soil

  • Gujarat's Climate Change Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to join the worldwide 'Save Soil' initiative. Sadhguru, the Founder and Spiritual Leader of Isha Outreach, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Ahmedabad. Jaggi Sadguru has set out on a 100-day motorcycle tour to raise awareness about the soil regeneration campaign throughout the world. The 30,000-kilometer journey through Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East is an attempt to raise awareness among policymakers on the importance of soil. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev was in Gujarat as part of this tour to sign an MOU on 'Save Soil.'
  • In this regard, during the time of Narendra Modi as Gujarat's Chief Minister in 2006-07, Gujarat launched a foresight effort called "Soil Health Card" to protect the health and condition of the state's soil. In the state, there are 115 soil health laboratories that measure nutrient levels in the soil. The 'Soil Health Card' plan has now been deployed across the country, thanks to the Prime Minister's directive.

NTPC Releases 'Biodiversity Policy 2022' for Restoring Ecosystem

  • NTPC Limited renewed the Biodiversity Policy 2022 to set up a comprehensive vision and guiding principle for conservation, restoration, and enhancement of biodiversity. The objectives of policy are aligned with environmental and sustainability policies. The policy also aims to adopt systematic consideration of local threats to biodiversity beyond the company's business activities.
  • NTPC was the first PSU to issue Biodiversity Policy in 2018. NTPC also became a member of the India Business & Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI) in 2018. NTPC is also collaborating with local communities, organizations, regulatory agencies and research institutes of national/international repute in the field of biodiversity.
