Canada to Return 18th Century Annapurna Statue to India

  • A stone statue of goddess Annapurna, which may have been stolen and transported to Canada over a century back, will be returned to India.
  • The statue, dating back to the 18th century, was handed over by interim president and vice-chancellor of the University of Regina, Thomas Chase, to India's High Commissioner to Ottawa, Ajay Bisaria.
  • The statue is believed to be originally from Varanasi and was part of the university's collection in its MacKenzie Art Gallery.

Kylie Minogue Sets UK chart Records With her New Album, Disco

  • Pop star Kylie Minogue has become the first female artist to have a number one album in the UK in five separate decades.
  • Her 15th studio album, Disco, topped the charts with 55,000 sales, meaning it has also scored the best opening week of any new release in 2020 so far.
  • It is her eighth number one, meaning she has overtaken Elton John, Cliff Richard and George Michael in the all-time chart leaderboard.

Sitharaman Hands over Coins of Ancient, Medieval Period to Prahlad Singh Patel

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman handed over confiscated ancient and medieval period antiquities/ coins to Union MoS for Tourism and Culture, Prahlad Singh Patel. 
  • The 40282 confiscated coins belong to the Sultanate and Mughal era from the period 1206 to 1720 AD, princely states such as Kushana, Yaudheya, Guptas, Pratihar, Cholas, Rajputs, Mughals, Marathas, Kashmir and also British India, French and certain Australian coins from the period 1800-1900 AD.
  • The confiscated items also cover 18 antique seal/stamp/religious emblem to be worn by the person having authority by Ruler to execute the Royal orders and 1 Silver Kamarband (waistband) to be worn by Royal/affluent family women.

After Tumult, a Delayed Philip Guston Exhibition Will Open in 2022

  • The four major museums that stirred a controversy by delaying a landmark Philip Guston exhibition in response to concerns about racial sensitivity announced that the show would open in May 2022 at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston. Previous statements had suggested that the deferral could last longer.
  • The retrospective will be presented at the MFA in Boston from 1 May 2022 through 11 September of that year; at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, from 23 October 2022 through 15 January 2023; at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from 26 February 2023 through 27 August of that year; and at Tate Modern in London from 3 October 2023 through 4 February 2024.
  • The directors of the four museums announced in September that they were delaying the show, possibly until 2024, amid apparent worry that Guston's depictions of hooded Ku Klux Klan figures and other imagery could offend viewers.

British-era Cannonball Found in Farmer's Field

  • A cannonball, which is said to be of the British period, was found in an agricultural field of Harinagar village of Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The shell was found in the field of a farmer when he was digging the field.
  • Police have seized the explosive projectile and contacted the Archaeological Department in Agra for ascertaining the period to which it belongs as it is suspected to be of British days.
  • Singh said that a canon too was found in the area last year.
