10th Century Buddha Vihar Discovered in Jharkhand's Hazaribag

  • A 10th century structure resembling a small 'Buddha Vihar' (Buddhist shrine-cum-monastery) has been discovered during an excavation, being carried out by Archeological Survey of India (ASI), in the foothills of Juljul Hill at Sadar block of Hazaribagh district, around 110-km from capital Ranchi.
  • The ASI identified three mounds in the foothills having links to Buddhism last year. The excavation of the first mound last year led to the discovery of a complete shrine with a central and two subsidiary shrines, just two metres below the surface. However, the excavation work was suspended after two months due to Covid-19 pandemic triggered lockdowns and some other reasons.
  • In the second round of excavation, beginning the last week of January this year, the second mound, around 40-meters away from the first mound or central shrine, was excavated and a small Buddha Vihar like structure was discovered.

Australia's Oldest Rock Painting is an Anatomically Accurate Kangaroo

  • A nearly-life-size depiction of a kangaroo — realistic genitalia included — is the oldest known rock painting in Australia. Scientists recently pinpointed its age to 17,300 years ago with a technique that had never been used on Australian ancient art before: measuring radioactive carbon in wasp nests from rocks near the artwork.
  • The kangaroo painting extends across the ceiling of a rock shelter and spans nearly 7 feet (2 meters), which is roughly the height of a modern kangaroo. This and other paintings in northwestern Australia's Kimberley region share certain stylistic features with the earliest cave art from Europe and Asia, the researchers reported. Very old animal paintings such as these are typically life-size (or close to it); they represent anatomy in a similar way, and their outlines are only partly filled-in with sketched lines. Because of these features, the paintings were thought to be among Australia's oldest.
  • However, to precisely date such art, scientists often turn to radiocarbon dating, which measures the ratio of different versions, or isotopes, of carbon in an object. But it requires organic material, which is scarce in rock paintings.

Hundreds of Stone Age Tools Found

  • An archaeological dig at a site earmarked for housing has uncovered more than 300 Stone Age tools and artefacts.
  • The 9,000-year-old site, on Castle Hill, Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, is "on a par with the oldest proven Mesolithic site" in Wales, archaeologists say.
  • The site was a target for developers for about a decade and planning consent was granted for a house in 2017.
  • But the need for an archaeological dig was agreed before building could begin.
  • The site yielded a total of 314 stone artefacts. Experts believe it was a sandy ridge overlooking the flood-plain of the River Clwyd.
  • Many of the finds were flakes of flint and chert - a hard, fine-grained sedimentary rock - but rudimentary tools were also discovered.

Discovered in Bhimbetka, India's Lone Fossil of World's Oldest Animal

  • Hidden in plain sight, one of the rarest fossils in the world may have been discovered in the fascinating Bhimbetka rock shelters, a UNESCO site about 40 km from Bhopal.
  • Researchers believe they have found the first-ever fossil in India of a Dickinsonia, the Earth's 'oldest animal', dating back 570 million years, on the roof of what's called the 'Auditorium Cave' at Bhimbetka.
  • Dickinsonia fossils have shown they could exceed four feet in length, but the one found in Bhimbetka is 17 inches long.

Jallikattu Fails to Make the Cut at Oscars

  • Filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery's Jallikattu, India's official entry in the Best International Feature category at the 93rd Academy Awards, is out of the Oscars race.
