National Handloom Day

August 7 is observed as National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement and to celebrate our country's rich fabrics and colourful weaves. The day is dedicated to raise awareness among the public and to increase the contribution towards the socio-economic development of the weavers. The day was first observed in 2015 by the Government of India.
The first National Handloom Day was organised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai. The main aim of this day is to make people aware of the rich history of Indian handloom as synthetic fabrics have taken over the textile industry in the present era. Hence, the day is observed to celebrate India's rich fabrics and colourful weaves.

Hiroshima Day

August 6, 2021, observed solemnly as Hiroshima Day around the world, will be the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city in the final year of World War II. On this day in 1945, the United States dropped the very first deployed nuclear bomb in the city of Hiroshima, wiping out an estimated 39 per cent of the population, most of who were civilians. Along with the atomic bombing of Nagasaki three days later, these instances remain the only recorded use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.
The Manhattan Project, commissioned by the US, created two atomic bombs. The first one, called 'The Little Boy' was dropped in the city of Hiroshima while the second one, dubbed 'The Fat Man', was dropped in Nagasaki by the US on August 6 and 9, respectively.

Eighth SCO Meeting of Law & Justice Ministers

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju will be attending the eighth meeting of Ministers of Justice of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on August 6. He will be joined by Minister of State for Law & Justice, Prof. SP Singh Baghel.
In the eighth SCO Meeting of Law & Justice Ministers, member nations will further deliberate on areas of cooperation; the role of COVID-19 laws in the pandemic; providing free legal aid to citizens in accordance with national legislation; the role of the said ministries in countering corruption and other allied areas of cooperation and assistance in legal services. A Joint Statement will be released after the SCO meeting concludes.
The Ministers of (Law and) Justice and senior officials/experts from the India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will be participating in the Meeting.

U.S. Coast Guard Day

The U. S. Coast Guard Day is held every August 4 to honour the establishment of the U.S. Coast Guard and the courageous work of the service members of the Coast Guard.
The United States Coast Guard was established on 4th August, 1790 by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton and later on known as the Revenue Marine.
The Coast Guard that we see today went with several changes. The Congress Act was signed by President Woodrow Wilson and converted into law. According to this law, the Revenue Marine was combined with another agency known as the United States Life-Saving Service with the intent of having a single entity responsible for maritime law enforcement and life-saving.
After merger and consolidation, it grew larger. The merger took place in 1915 and changed the name to the United States Coast Guard.

Act East: India, ASEAN FMs Meet

External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will take part in the India-ASEAN Foreign Ministers meet virtually.
Brunei will be the host of the meeting. The meeting will see the focus on COVID-19 cooperation and connectivity as the top priority. The meet is part of the annual mechanism and the group has a similar mechanism with the US, Australia, Russia, Canada and New Zealand.
A number of engagements take place between ASEAN and India annually including at the leaders level. Earlier this year the 23rd ASEAN-India senior officials meeting had taken place and was co-chaired by Secretary (East) of the external affairs ministry Riva Ganguly Das and the Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and SOM Leader of Thailand Thani Thongphakdi.

Muslim Women Rights Day

The Ministry of Minority Affairs announced that "Muslim Women Rights Day" will be observed across the country on August 1. It will celebrate the second anniversary of the enactment of the law against triple talaq.
The practice of granting instant divorce was classified as a criminal offence through a law enforced by the government on August 1, 2019. Though the Centre faced issues in clearing the bill through the Rajya Sabha, it finally succeeded in achieving the goal on July 31, 2019.
Naqvi, along with Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav attended a programme in New Delhi to observe the "Muslim Women Rights Day".
The 2017 bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 27 December 2018. However, in the Rajya Sabha the opposition demanded it to be sent to the Standing Committee. As the bill stood not passed in the parliamentary session, an ordinance which had made the bill operative, expired on 22 January 2019. The government re-promulgated an identical bill on 10 January 2019. This bill was passed in the Lok Sabha but was again stalled in the Rajya Sabha. The bill lapsed again when the Parliamentary session adjourned sine die in April 2019.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2019 was to expire on 29 August 2019, six weeks after start of parliamentary session, post the 2019 Indian general elections. The government introduced a new bill in the Lok Sabha on 21 June 2019. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on 25 July 2019 and by the Rajya Sabha on 30 July 2019. The bill was assented to by the President, Ram Nath Kovind, on 31 July 2019. It was subsequently notified in the gazette on the same day. The act is retrospectively effective from 19 September 2018.
