India-Chile 7th Foreign Office Consultations

The 7th Foreign Office Consultations between India and Chile were held in Santiago.
India was represented by Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs Riva Ganguly Das.
Chile was represented by Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms. Carolina Valdivia Torres.
During the consultations, both sides reviewed their bilateral relations including trade & investments, agriculture, defence, health & pharmaceuticals, space, energy, disaster management, cooperation in Antarctica, cultural & consular issues.
They also exchanged talks on COVID-19 situation and possibilities of enhancing trade & investment partnerships in post covid-19 pandemic economic recovery.
Chile acts as window to Latin America and to Pacific Alliance for India. It is the fifth largest trading partner of India across the Latin American region. Both the countries signed the Preferential Trade Agreement in 2017 in order to enhance the trade. Bilateral trade between both the countries is growing with time. Both the countries are partners in International Solar Alliance as well. In 2019, 70th year of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations was commemorated.

World Ozone Day

World Ozone Day also known as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on September 16, every year. The day reminds the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that depletes the Ozone Layer. On this day people from all over the world are expected to join the Montreal protocol for talks and seminars.
Life is not possible on Earth without the ozone layer. It is found in the upper layers of the atmosphere and is a highly reactive gas. It protects life on Earth by absorbing Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation and so is also known as Ozone Shield.
The theme of World Ozone Day 2021 is 'Montreal Protocol – keeping us, our food, and vaccines cool'. As per the UN, this year the day highlights, Montreal Protocol does so much more like slowing climate change and helping to boost energy efficiency in the cooling sector, which contributes to food security.

Engineer's Day: India Celebrates M. Visvesvaraya's 160th Birthday

Every year on September 15, India along with Sri Lanka and Tanzania celebrates National Engineer's Day to recognise and honour the achievements of the great engineer M. Visvesvaraya.
This year marks the 160th birth anniversary of M. Visvesvaraya who was born on September 15, 1861, in the Muddenahalli village of Karnataka.
Popularly known as Sir MV, Visvesvaraya undertook many complex projects and delivered remarkable infrastructural results during his career. He patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune to raise the food supply level and storage to the highest levels know as 'block system' in 1903.
An expert in irrigation techniques and flood disaster management, MV was not just a great civil engineer but also served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1919. While serving as the Diwan of Mysore, in 1915 he was awarded 'Knight' as a commander of the British Indian Empire by King George V.

International Day of Democracy

September 15 is celebrated as International Day of Democracy after being established in 2007 through a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In the words of the United Nations, International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of the international community, can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality.
In September 1997 the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) adopted a Universal Declaration on Democracy. That Declaration affirms the principles of democracy, the elements and exercise of democratic government, and the international scope of democracy.

Hindi Diwas 2021

India celebrates Hindi Diwas, also known as Hindi Day, on September 14 every year to commemorate the adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as one of the official languages of the nation.
One of the reasons behind celebrating this day is to prevent the increasing trend of the English language in the nation and the neglect of Hindi. It is to be noted that Mahatma Gandhi called Hindi the language of the masses. The Father of the Nation also talked about making Hindi the national language of the nation.
The Constituent Assembly of India accepted Hindi, written in Devanagari script, as the official language of India on September 14, 1949.
Officially, the first Hindi Day was celebrated on September 14, 1953. The reason behind adopting Hindi as one of the official languages was to simplify administration in a nation with multiple languages.
Efforts were made by several writers, poets and activists for the adoption of Hindi as the official language.

International Day for South-South Cooperation

The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is an initiative for the economic, social and political developments of the countries in the Southern region. Basically, the South-South cooperation refers to the technical cooperation among developing countries in the Global South.
Every year, this day is celebrated globally on September 12. The international day South-South Cooperation also highlights the efforts of the United Nations for cooperation among developing countries.
The South-South collaboration helps developing nations to share knowledge, skills, expertise and resources to meet their development goals through concerted efforts.

World First Aid Day 2021

World First Aid Day is observed on the second Saturday of September annually. So, this year, the day was celebrated on 11 September across the globe. The special day is marked to encourage people in first aid training, which helps in preventing injuries and saving lives in critical situations.
The theme for World First Aid Day 2021 is 'First aid and road safety,' according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

World First Aid Day 2021: 11 September

World First Aid Day is observed on the second Saturday of September every year. In 2021 the day is being observed on September 11, 2021. The day is an annual campaign aimed at promoting the importance of first aid training and increasing its accessibility to save more lives in a crisis. When a person suffers from minor or serious injury or illness, the first and immediate assistance given to the patient is termed as 'First Aid'.
The theme for World First Aid Day 2021 is 'First aid and road safety', according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
In 2000, World First Aid Day was established by the IFRC and for more than 100 years, this organisation has been providing first aid services to people. The history of this day dates back to 1859 when a young businessman, Henry Dunant, saw the carnage at the battle of Solfrino.

National Forest Martyrs Day

National Forest Martyrs Day is observed in India on September 11 every year to remember the sacrifice of those who laid their lives to protect the forests and wildlife across the remote corners of the country.
The Ministry of Environment and Forest made the declaration in 2013 and since then, people across India observe National Forest Martyrs Day every year on September 11 to pay tributes to the valour and sacrifice made the forest personnel to protect the forests and wildlife of India.
The National Forest Martyrs Day is observed to commemorate the Khejarli massacre, which took place on September 11 in 1730. During the massacre, Rajasthan's Maharaja Abhay Singh started cutting the Khejarli trees, which were considered as a sacred tree in the Bishnoi community in Khejarli village in Rajasthan.

TN to Observe Periyar's Birth Anniversary as Day of Social Justice

Tamil Nadu government has decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of reformist leader E. V. Ramasamy Periyar as "Social Justice Day".
E. V. Ramasamy Periyar was born on September 17. This day will now be celebrated as 'Social Justice Day' every year.
Periyar's ideology was all about social justice, equality, self-respect, and rationalism. This laid the foundation stone for Tamil society's growth during the last century. These ideologies would also pave way for the future. Thus, government decided to celebrate his birth anniversary every year to celebrate the symbolic reinforcement of his egalitarian principles.
He was commonly known as Periyar or Thanthai Periyar. He was an Indian social activist and politician. He started Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam and is known as the 'Father of the Dravidian movement'. He rebelled against the Brahmanical dominance as well as gender & caste inequality in Tamil Nadu.
E.V. Ramasamy joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1919, but resigned in 1925 after he realised that INC was only serving the interests of Brahmins. In 1924, he participated in non-violent agitation (satyagraha) at Vaikom, Travancore. He became the head of the Justice Party in 1939 and changed its name to Dravidar Kazhagam in 1944.

World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is marked every year on September 10 to create awareness about the ways in which suicide can be prevented.
The goal is to shine a light on the issues in hopes of reaching people who are struggling before it's too late. The ongoing pandemic has made a lot of people more anxious, depressed and susceptible to taking such extreme steps for several reasons, like job loss, losing a close one to coronavirus, lack of social gatherings and so on.
For the first time, this day was marked on September 10, 2003, as an initiative by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) teamed up with the World Health Organization (WHO) to create a day dedicated to a very important message: suicides are preventable.
The 2021 theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is "Creating Hope Through Action", which promises a collective initiative towards suicide prevention.
