Justice P Lakshmana Reddy Appointed As First Lokayukta Of AP

Justice P Lakshmana Reddy, a retired judge of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court, was sworn-in as the first Lokayukta of the state after its bifurcation in 2014.
Governor Biswabhusan Hairchandan administered the oath of office to Justice Reddy at a function in Vijayawada.
Justice Lakshmana Reddy will be in office for five years.
The YSR Congress government amended the Lokayukta Act in the recent budget session, enabling appointment of a retired judge as Lokayukta, paving the way for constituting the corruption-probing body.

Kapil Dev Appointed Chancellor Of Haryana Sports University

Cricket legend Kapil Dev will be the first Chancellor of the Haryana Sports University at Rai in Sonipat district.
The Sports University of Haryana will be the third sports university established by a state government in the country after Swarnim Gujarat Sports University (Gandhinagar) and Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University (Chennai).

Hungarian Writer And Dissident Gyorgy Konrad Dies At 86

Gyorgy Konrad, a writer and sociologist who was an iconic figure of Hungary''s dissident movement while the country was under communist rule, has died.
He was 86. He had been gravely ill and died at home in Budapest.
Known internationally for books like his 1969 novel "The Case Worker" and "A Guest in My Own Country: A Hungarian Life," a memoir published in 2007, Konrad was considered a steadfast advocate for individual freedoms.
Born to a prosperous Jewish family on April 2, 1933, in Debrecen, eastern Hungary, Konrad and his immediate family survived the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of numerous relatives.
He was president of the writers' association PEN International from 1990 to 1993 and president of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1997-2003.

Tiananmen Square Tank Man Photographer Charlie Cole Dies

Charlie Cole, one of the photographers who captured the famous Tank Man on film during the Tiananmen Square protests died, aged 64.
Cole won the 1990 World Press Photo award for his picture.
He had been living in Bali, Indonesia.
Cole was one of four photographers that captured the scene on 5 June 1989.

NCP MP Udayanraje Bhosale Joins BJP

Nationalist Congress Party MP from Satara and Maharashtra leader Udayanraje Bhosale joined Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of party president Amit Shah in New Delhi.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was also present. Earlier, Mr. Bhosale met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and submitted his resignation.
Mr Bhosale said, he agreed with the policies pursued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will work for Maharashtra as a BJP leader.
President Amit Shah said, it was a matter of happiness for BJP that a descendant of the Great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has joined the party. He hoped that Bhosale's presence will help BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Tonga's Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva Dies Aged 78

Tonga's Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva has died at the age of 78. Mr Pohiva was medically evacuated from the capital, Nuku'alofa, to a hospital in Auckland, New Zealand.
Mr Pohiva had served as Tonga's Prime Minister since 2014, and was Tonga's longest serving member of Parliament, coming into office in 1987.
He spent years campaigning against royal involvement in the island kingdom's politics, and in 2014 became the first commoner to be elected Prime Minister by Tonga's Parliament.

Hima Das Appointed as Brand Ambassador for Gatorade

PepsiCo India has roped in star athlete Hima Das as the brand ambassador for its sports drink brand Gatorade. She joins ace shuttler PV Sindhu and javelin star Neeraj Chopra as the brand's ambassadors in the country.
Gatorade India will also work with Hima Das during the period of partnership to understand her training and race-day nutrition better.
Tarun Bhagat, Director-Marketing, Hydration and Cola, PepsiCo India welcomed Hima Das into Gatorade's family of athletes.

UN Appoints Veteran Indian Officer to Lead Mission in Yemen

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed a veteran Indian Army official as the head of the world body's observer mission in Yemen's port city of Hodeidah.
Lieutenant General (retired) Abhijit Guha has been appointed as the Chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) and head of the UNMHA.
He will succeed Lieutenant General Michael Lollesgaard, who served as RCC Chair and head of UNMHA from January 31 to July 31, 2019.
Guha brings to this position 39 years of national and international military experience. He served from 2009-2013 as the Deputy Military Adviser and the Military Adviser within the Office of Military Affairs of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, while also establishing the Office of Peacekeeping and Strategic Partnerships in 2013.
He has also previously served as a Military Observer as part of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia during 1992-93.

Google Doodle Celebrates Hans Christian Joachim Gram

Google is celebrating the 166th birth anniversary of microbiologist Hans Christian Joachim Gram with a doodle in his honour.
Gram was born on September 13, 1853, in Denmark's Copenhagen. Gram is best known for pioneering the method of the Gram stain to identify bacteria.
The Danish microbiologist earned an M.D. from the University of Copenhagen in 1878. He then traveled through Europe between 1883 to 1885 studying pharmacology and bacteriology.

Pramod Kumar Mishra Is Principal Secy To PM Narendra Modi

Pramod Kumar Mishra was appointed principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, succeeding Nripendra Misra. Former cabinet secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha was appointed principal adviser to the prime minister.
Mishra, who had been additional principal secretary to the PM since 2014, was promoted after Mishra sought to be relieved of his duties.
Mishra served as principal secretary to Modi when he was Gujarat chief minister between 2001 and 2004.
Sinha's appointment order did not say whether he would be given the status of a cabinet minister like his senior counterparts in the Prime Minister's Office — PK Mishra and national security adviser Ajit Doval. Both Mishra and Sinha will report to the prime minister.

Former Indonesian President Habibie Dies, Aged 83

Former Indonesian president B J Habibie has died at the age of 83. He died of heart failure at Jakarta's Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital.
Habibie, whose full name was Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, was Indonesia's third president following Suharto's more than 30-year rule.
An engineer by training, he was in office for less than two years. He saw Indonesia through the Asian financial crisis and ordered a referendum for East Timor's independence.
The body of the late president will be taken to his house in Kuningan, Jakarta. He will be buried next to his wife in the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery.
