Global Opera Legend Jessye Norman Dies At 74

  •  Superstar singer Jessye Norman, an American soprano who showcased her majestic yet intimate voice at opera houses and orchestras around the world, died. She was 74 years old.
  • One of the contemporary era's most revered opera singers, the Grammy-winner died at a New York hospital due to septic shock and multi-organ failure.

Noted Nephrologist H L Trivedi Died

  •  Renowned kidney transplant surgeon and Padma Shri recipient Dr H L Trivedi died due to age-related illness. He was 87.
  • Trivedi, hailed as an expert in handling kidney transplant surgeries, was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2015 for his contribution to the society as a nephrologist.
  • He left a lucrative career in Canada and came back to Ahmedabad to set up this institute to serve the people of this country.
  • Trivedi also established dialysis centre network in district hospitals across Gujarat with the help of the state government.

  •  Senior IAS officer Abhishek Singh was appointed as the chief executive officer of MyGov India, the government''s citizen-centric online platform.
  • The 1995-batch IAS officer of Nagaland cadre will succeed tech entrepreneur Arvind Gupta, who completed his tenure in July, 2019.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for the appointment of Abhishek Singh.

Google Celebrates Achievements of Psychiatrist Dr. Herbert Kleber With a Doodle

  •  Google Doodle honoured psychiatrist Dr. Herbert Kleber on the 23rd anniversary of his election to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine, which was formerly known as the Institute of Medicine.
  • The doodle shows Dr. Kleber talking to a patient as she finally manages to recover from her trauma.
  • The doodle is illustrated by Massachusetts-based artist Jarrett J. Krosoczka, who is also the author of the graphic memoir - 'Hey, Kiddo'.
  • Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 19, 1934, Dr. Kleber was known for his pioneering work in addiction treatment.
  • He always described himself as an optimist, which helped him work with addicts for 40 years.

SS Mallikarjuna Rao Appointed New CMD Of Punjab National Bank

  •  The Union government appointed SS Mallikarjuna Rao, Managing Director and CEO of Allahabad Bank as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Punjab National Bank. 
  • Mr Rao will replace Sunil Mehta who superannuated on September 30, 2019. Mallikarjuna Rao, 57, who already had a stint with Punjab National Bank, will oversee the merger of Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India with Punjab National Bank.
  • A seasoned banker, Mallikarjuna Rao was with Oriental Bank of Commerce before being elevated as Executive Director of Syndicate Bank in 2016 and two years later he was appointed MD & CEO of Allahabad Bank in September, 2018.

Surjit S Bhalla Appointed as Executive Director for India at IMF

  •  Eminent economist Surjit S Bhalla was appointed as the Executive Director for India on the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • Bhalla (71) succeeded former RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn, who died in the US on July 30, 2019 after a brief illness.
  • Gokarn, who died at the age of 59, was appointed as the executive director for India on the board of the IMF in November 2015. He was to complete his term in October, 2019.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the appointment of Bhalla for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

K. S. Dhatwalia Appointed Chief Spokesperson of Govt.

  • Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia, an Indian Information Service (IIS) officer, was appointed the principal spokesperson of the Union government.
  • Dhatwalia, a 1984-batch IIS officer, was posted as the new principal director general of the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the publicity wing of the central government.
 

RBI Appoints Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as New Administrator of PMC

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) superseded the Board of crisis-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Ltd. Mumbai and appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the administrator of the bank.
  • RBI had recommended removal of the scam-hit bank's chairman Waryam Singh in 2018 after it had found out his involvement in sanctioning loans to realty developer HDIL and related-entities without proper due diligence and much above the regulatory limits.
 

Pakistan Replaces Permanent Envoy in UN

  • Pakistan replaced its permanent envoy in UN Dr. Maleeha Lodhi in what can be viewed as an outcome of her failure to convince UN member states of Islamabad's narrative on Kashmir.
  • Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the appointment of ambassador Munir Akram as Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
  • Akram would replace Lodhi who held the office of Pakistan's envoy to the UN since February 2015.
  • Akram served as Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN previously as well, holding the office for six years between 2002 and 2008.

CJI Recommends Justice Rajendra Menon as Chairperson of Armed Forces Tribunal

  • The Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said that Justice Rajendra Menon, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court was recommended as the Chairperson of the Armed Forces Tribunal. 
  • The incumbent Chairperson Justice Virender Singh is retiring on October 6, 2019.
 

Former Foreign Secretary K. P. S. Menon Passes Away

  • Former Foreign Secretary K. P. S. Menon (Jr.) passed away at his residence near Kowdiar in Thiruvananthapuram on September 28, 2019. He was 90.
  • Mr. Menon was Foreign Secretary from 1987 to 1989. A 1951 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), he had also served as Ambassador to Bangladesh, Egypt, Japan, Hungary and China.
  • Mr. Menon, who hails from Palat House in Ottapalam in Palakkad, is survived by his wife Lalithamika and three sons Sivarama Menon, Shivasankara Menon and Siddhartha Menon. His father K.P.S. Menon (Senior) was the first Foreign Secretary of India and his nephew Shivsankara Menon was also Foreign Secretary and National Security Adviser.
 

Air Chief Marshal Bhadauria Takes Charge as New IAF Chief

  • Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took charge as the 26th chief of the Indian Air Force.
  • He succeeded Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, who retired after 41 years of service in the IAF.
  • Air Marshal Bhadauria was commissioned in the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in June 1980, and has held various command, staff and instructional positions.
  • An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Bhadauria was commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF in June 1980 and won the coveted 'Sword of Honour' for standing first in the overall order of merit.
  • During his nearly four-decade career, Bhadauria commanded a Jaguar squadron and a premier Air Force Station.
 

Kalia from 'Sholay', Actor Viju Khote, Passes Away

  • Veteran Hindi and Marathi film-theatre actor Viju Khote passed away due to multiple organ failure. He was 77.
  • The actor, most famous for playing the dacoit Kalia in 'Sholay' and Robert in 'Andaz Apna Apna', died at his residence.
  • The several popular feature films that Khote was a part of also included 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' and 'Ventilator'. He also featured in the TV show 'Zabaan Sambhalke'.

Maharashtra's Longest Serving MLA Ganpatrao Deshmukh Retires after 59 Years in Politics

  • Maharashtra's longest serving public representative Ganpatrao Deshmukh, 93, finally called it a day in the field of electoral politics.
  • Deshmukh announced that he would not contest the upcoming state assembly polls scheduled on October 21, 2019. Deshmukh who was a member of the Maharashtra legislative assembly for 11 terms or 59 years from Sangole in Solapur district, also nominated his successor from the constituency.
  • Deshmukh, a member of the Peasants and Workers party (PWP), took the decision citing health reasons and limited eyesight. During a party meeting on Sunday, Deshmukh said that Bhausaheb Rupnar, would contest the upcoming polls from Sangole, the seat Deshmukh represented for six decades.
 

Former BSF Constable Tej Bahadur Yadav Joins JJP

  • Tej Bahadur Yadav, the BSF constable who was dismissed from service after he had released a video in 2017 on quality of food served to soldiers, joined Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) in the presence of its leader Dushyant Chautala.
  • The JJP had contested the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) where it had to suffer a humiliating defeat being unable to secure even a single seat. Its subsequent alliance with the BSP also came to an end.
  • In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Yadav had filed his nomination from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency against Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate. However, his candidature was rejected by the returning officer after he failed to submit a certificate on whether or not he was dismissed from the service for corruption or disloyalty to the government.
 

Kurt Volker, Trump's Envoy for Ukraine, Resigns

  • Kurt D. Volker, the State Department's special envoy for Ukraine who got caught in the middle of the pressure campaign by President Trump and his lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, to find damaging information about Democrats, abruptly resigned his post.
  • His departure was the first resignation since revelations about Mr. Trump's efforts to pressure Ukraine's president to investigate former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and other Democrats. 
  • Mr. Volker, a widely respected former ambassador to NATO, served in the part-time, unpaid position of special envoy to help Ukraine resolve its armed confrontation with Russia-sponsored separatists.
