Mexican Journalist Killed in 'Armed Attack'

  • A journalist has been killed in an armed attack in northern Mexico, local authorities say - the third reporter to be killed in the country this year (2020).
  • Jorge Armenta, the director of media outlet Medios Obson in Ciudad Obregon, was under government protection after receiving death threats.
  • More than 140 journalists have been killed in Mexico since the year 2000.
  • Mexico has been described as the deadliest country for reporters outside a war zone by the journalism advocacy group Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Israel Gets First Ethiopia-Born Minister

  • Israel is set to get its first Ethiopia-born minister, with the nomination of a female MP brought there in a secret operation in the 1980s.
  • Pnina Tamano-Shata has been chosen by incoming deputy prime minister Benny Gantz, who is forming a unity government with PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
  • Israel's Ethiopian-Jewish community often complains of discrimination.
  • Incidents of police using force against Israelis of Ethiopian origin - including fatal shootings - have led to street protests and clashes in recent years.
  • The 140,000-strong community is among the poorest in the country and suffers from high rates of unemployment.

Zubair Iqbal Appointed MD J-K Bank

  • The Jammu and Kashmir administration approved the appointment of senior vice president of HDFC Bank Zubair Iqbal as the new managing director of Jammu and Kashmir Bank.
  • R K Chibber will continue as the bank''s chairman for the next three years.
  • Iqbal will have a three-year tenure.

Sahitya Akademi winner Debesh Roy Passes Away

  • Veteran Bengali author Debesh Roy, who was conferred the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel 'Teesta Parer Brittanto', died at a private hospital in Kolkata.
  • He was born in Pabna in present-day Bangladesh on December 17, 1936. He had five decades of career as a writer.
  • Besides Teesta Parer Britanta', he will be remembered for books like Borisaler Jogen Mondal , Manush Khun Kore Keno and Samay Asamayer Brittanto . His first book was Jajati.
  • Roy was 84 and he is survived by his son.

Rajesh Goel Appointed as Director General of NAREDCO

  • Realtors body National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) has appointed Rajesh Goel as director general (DG) of the association. 
  • Earlier, Goel was serving as the chairman and managing director, Hindustan Prefab Ltd.
  • Rajesh Goel is a professional with over 37 years of experience in leading PSUs under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, superannuated in November 2019 as the chairman and managing director of Hindustan Prefab Ltd.
  • NAREDCO and CREDAI are the two major associations of real estate developers across the country.

Padma Bhushan Recipient Professor Anisuzzaman Passed Away

  • Padma Bhushan recipient and Bangladesh''s National Professor Anisuzzaman died at a military hospital in Dhaka.
  • India had awarded him Padma Bhushan for his distinguished service in fields of Bangla literature and education. He was also awarded Ekushey Padak and Swadhinata Padak, the highest state awards given by Bangladesh.
  • Born in Kolkata in February 1937, Prof Anisuzzaman and his family shifted to Bangladesh soon after the partition in 1947.

V. Vidyavathi becomes new DG of Archaeological Survey of India

  • IAS officer V. Vidyavathi is appointed as the new Director-General of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) effective from 12th May, 2020. She is a 1991 batch Karnataka cadre officer.
  • Vidyavathi will be serving in the rank of Additional Secretary to the Government of India. Her appointment is confirmed by the order of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Manoj Ahuja Appointed New CBSE Chief

  • Odisha cadre IAS Manoj Ahuja has been appointed the new chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
  • Ahuja is currently working as Special Director, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Department of Personnel and Training.
  • Ahuja will replace Anita Karwal as the chairman of the CBSE.

Akhil Kumar Re-inducted into NADA Disciplinary Panel

  • Former Commonwealth Games gold-winning boxer Akhil Kumar has been re-inducted into the National Anti-Doping Agency's Disciplinary Panel. Akhil, who is also serving in Haryana Police as ACP Gurugram, was formerly in the panel from 2017 to 2019.
  • The Arjuna award-winning Olympian is among the most accomplished names in Indian boxing and has also been the government observer for the sport between 2017 and 2019.
