Eminent Writer Mannu Bhandari Passes Away

  • Noted writer Mannu Bhandari passed away. She was 90.
  • Bhandari was the wife of illustrious Hindi fiction writer Rajendra Yadav and was best known for her novels 'Aapki Banti' and 'Mahabhoj'. The well-received 1974 Hindi feature film 'Rajnigandha' was an adaptation from her novel 'Yahi Sach Hai'.
  • Born on April 3, 1931, in Madhya Pradesh's Bhanpura and primarily raised in Ajmer, Bhandari belonged to a renowned family. Her father produced one of the first English to Hindi and English to Marathi dictionaries.

Babasaheb Purandare, Noted Historian and Padma Vibhushan Awardee, Passes Away

  • Noted historian-writer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Babasaheb Purandare passed away in Pune (Maharashtra). He was 99.
  • Balwant Moreshwar Purandare was popularly known as Babasaheb.
  • He was conferred with Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2019 and the Maharashtra Bhushan award in 2015. He had also penned various books on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and had dedicated his life to history and research.
  • Babasaheb had also written and directed the play "Jaanta Raja" which reportedly has been performed by over 200 artists and translated and enacted in as many as five languages.

Plaeto Signs Rahul Dravid as Brand Ambassador

  • Plaeto, a footwear brand for children, roped in Rahul Dravid as its brand ambassador and mentor. The brand announced the partnership along with a campaign featuring Dravid. The campaign was developed by Bangalore-based People Design and Communication, in partnership with team Plaeto. The video campaign was promoted across the brand's social media channels and went live on 14th November.
  • Plaeto, founded by Ravi Kallayil, Sara Kilgore and Pavan Kareti, in March 2020, claims to develop foot health-focused 'shoes for growing feet', designed specifically for Indian children. Plaeto shoes have a 50% lower carbon footprint as compared to the average athletic shoe.

Daniel Brühl Named as Goodwill Ambassador of UN-World Food Programme

  • Spanish-German Actor Daniel Brühl has been named the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP). He has joined the WFP's mission to reach a world with Zero Hunger. As the goodwill ambassador, he will inform about the main drivers of hunger and showcase the efforts of UN WFP to tackle both immediate needs and root causes of hunger.
  • In his role as a Goodwill Ambassador, Bruhl will raise awareness for the millions of people going to bed hungry every night and engage his supporters in advocacy for a Zero Hunger world. The 43-year-old actor will also use his platforms to inform his supporters about the main drivers of hunger and to showcase WFP's efforts to tackle both immediate needs and root causes of hunger.

Novo Nordisk India Appoints Kapil Dev as Brand Ambassador

  • Novo Nordisk India announced Kapil Dev as the brand ambassador. The partnership aims to create awareness about better diabetes management and early insulin adoption.
  • The announcement stems from the fact that by 2045, nearly 134.3 million people in India are expected to have diabetes. Diabetes is primarily a lifestyle condition that has increased alarmingly across all age groups in India, and the prevalence among the younger population has also increased. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to raise awareness about the disease and its preventive measures.

He was a prolific author and public intellectual who wrote extensively on history, public policy and spirituality. He was active in the VHP and worked selflessly towards social service.

FW de Klerk, South Africa's Last Apartheid Ruler Dies

  • FW de Klerk, the former President of South Africa and the last white person to lead the country, died. He was 85.
  • He came to power in 1989 under apartheid, a system of legalised racism, but later became a key figure in the transition to democracy.
  • He ordered Nelson Mandela's release from prison, leading to historic polls where the anti-apartheid leader became the first black President.
  • De Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela for helping to negotiate an end to apartheid. But his legacy divides opinion in South Africa.
