Padma Shri Awardee and Popular 'Villupattu' Exponent Subbu Arumugam Passes Away
Popular 'Villupattu' exponent Subbu Arumugam, who enthralled audiences for about four decades, passed away in Chennai. He was 94.
'Villupattu' is an ancient form of musical story-telling and the narration is interspersed with music. It is performed mostly during temple festivals. Arumugam is said to have popularised this art form effectively attracting audiences of all age-groups over the years.
Padma Shri awardee Subbu Arumugam's art showcased a perfect blend of Tamil and folk form. His knowledge of the Tamil language and literature and his exposure to folk art forms drew him towards Villupaatu.

Samajwadi Party Leader Mulayam Singh Yadav Passes Away
Three-time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away at a private Gurugram hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 82.
Mulayam Singh dominated the national politics in the post-Mandal era by galvanising formidable OBC-Muslim combine in the state, which usually decides the fate of the national government.
Yadav, who began as a wrestler – switched over to school teaching before taking a final plunge into politics. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in Uttar Pradesh eight times from 1967 to 1996. He was also elected to Lok Sabha seven times since 1996, as he continues to be the member of the lower house.
Yadav became a minister for the first time in Uttar Pradesh in 1977. He also held the position of Lok Dal president in 1980 and for a period of two years- 1985-87 he was the chief of Janata Dal in Uttar Pradesh.
The Samajwadi leader first became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989. It was during this tenure that his government ordered firing at 'Kar Sevaks' in Ayodhya on November 2, 1990.
After the Babri Mosque demolition in 1992, he again became chief Minister (1993-95). He became the Chief Minister of UP for the third time in 2003 and held the position for four years.
Padma Shri Dr. Temsula Ao Passes Away
Former chairperson of Nagaland State Commission for Women, academician, renowned writer and Padma Shri Dr. Temsula Ao passed away in Dimapur. She was 80.
Dr. Temsula Ao, who was known as a leading literary voice in the northeast, was awarded Padma Shri in 2007.
She was a recipient of Nagaland Governor's Award for Distinction in Literature, Meghalaya governor's Gold Medal and the Sahitya Akademi Award, among other recognitions.
She spent almost half of her life teaching at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
She retired from there in 2010 as professor of English and dean of School of Humanities and Education NEHU.
Her literary works are reported to have been translated in German and French as well as Hindi, Assamese and Bengali.
Smriti Mandhana Unveiled as Gulf Oil India Ambassador
Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana signed on as a brand ambassador of lubricant manufacturer Gulf Oil India.
India women's vice-captain joins current men's cricket ace Hardik Pandya and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as an ambassador for the company.
Through the partnership, Gulf Oil stated that it aims to 'celebrate women power' and 'inspire female audience in the country', while also honouring the achievements of Indian women cricketers.

Veteran Actor Arun Bali Passes Away
Veteran actor Arun Bali died due to prolonged age-related illness. The actor was last seen in Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Goodbye.
Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, in 1942, Arun Bali is known for his performances in 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014), Airlift (2016), Kedarnath (2018) and Panipat (2019) among many other films. He made his TV debut in the year 1989 with Doosra Kewal. He went on to many TV shows such as Chankaya, Swabhimaan and Kumkum Pyaara Sa Bandhan.
