Air Marshal Balakrishnan Manikantan Takes over Charge of Southern Air Command

Air Marshal Balakrishnan Manikantan took over as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Southern Air Command. An impressive Guard of Honour was presented to the Air Marshal on taking over the command.
He has flown over 5,400 hours on various types of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft and is a Helicopter Combat Leader and a Type Qualified Flying Instructor.
Balakrishnan has had instructional tenures at National Defence Academy and at Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), commanded a frontline helicopter unit and two premier IAF stations.
Prior to taking over the charge of the Southern Air Command, the Air Marshal was the Senior Air Staff Officer at Eastern Air Command, handling air operations.

Centre Ends 'Archaic Colonial Era' Cantonments

As per reports, sixty-two cantonments across the nation will cease to exist and be classified as military stations, while those housing civilians will fall under local municipalities.
This is a significant departure from the "archaic colonial practice of creating cantonments.
Yol in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district is the first to shed its cantonment tag.
As per officials, contrary to popular belief, the move will prove beneficial to all alike.
Citizens who were unable to access state government welfare schemes through the municipality, will now be able to do so. As far as the Army is concerned, it too can now focus on the construction of the military station.

DRDO, Indian Navy Conduct Successful Trial of Indigenous air Droppable Container

The Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Navy conducted a successful trial of an air droppable container with a 150 kg payload capability.
The maiden trial was conducted off the coast of Goa.
The trial was conducted to enhance the naval operational logistics capabilities by providing quick response to meet the requirement of critical engineering stores to ships which are deployed more than 2,000 km from the coast. It reduces the requirement of ships to come close to the coast to collect spares and stores.
Three DRDO laboratories – Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam; Aerial Delivery Research & Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra and Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru were involved in the development of the container.

Two Indian Naval Ships in Singapore Participate in ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise

Two frontline warships of the Indian Navy arrived in Singapore and participated in the inaugural edition of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise. The harbour phase of the exercise is scheduled to be held at the Changi Naval Base from May 2 to 4, while the sea phase will be conducted from May 7 to 8 in the South China Sea.
The two Indian naval ships in Singapore are INS Satpura and INS Delhi.
The ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023) will provide an opportunity to the Indian Navy and ASEAN navies to work closely with each other and conduct seamless operations in the maritime domain.
The ships, during their port call at Singapore, will also participate in the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX-23) and the International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC) being hosted by Singapore.

A First: Five Women Inducted into Artillery

Five women, who were commissioned as officers in the Indian Army today, have been inducted into the Regiment of Artillery making them the firsts to join a "major combat support" arm of the Army.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Rekha Singh, wife of gallantry award-winning Army soldier Naik Deepak Singh who lost his life in the Galwan clash with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh in June 2020, was commissioned into the Indian Army as an officer and has been posted in Ladakh.
The five women who were commissioned completed their training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. Three of these officers have been posted to units deployed along northern borders (with China) and the other two at locations in the Western Theatre (facing Pakistan).
Lt Mehak Saini was commissioned into a SATA regiment, Lt Sakshi Dubey and Lt Aditi Yadav into field regiments, Lt Pious Mudgil was commissioned into a medium regiment and Lt Akanksha was commissioned into a rocket regiment.

India, UK Joint Military Exercise 'Ajeya Warrior 2023' Commences in the UK

Military troops of India and the United Kingdom (UK) kick-started the seventh edition of 'Ajeya Warrior 2023', a two-week joint military exercise at UK's Salisbury Plains, as part of efforts to consolidate the overall military ties. The soldiers of the 2 Royal Gorkha Rifles from the UK and Indian Army troops from the Bihar Regiment are participating in the military exercise.
Ajeya Warrior is a biennial training event with the UK which is conducted alternatively in both countries. The last edition was held at Chaubatia, Uttarakhand in October 2021.

IAF's Only C-17 Woman Pilot Brings Back Indians from Sudan under Operation Kaveri

Flight Lieutenant Har Raj Kaur Boparai, IAF's first and only woman pilot of the heavy-lift transport aircraft C-17 Globemaster, took part in Operation Kaveri, India's complex mission to bring back its citizens safely from the strife-torn Sudan. The C-17 Globemaster is the largest aircraft asset of the Indian Air Force.
Flt Lt H. R. K. Boparai is the first and only woman officer of the IAF who's flown the C-17. She is the only woman officer in the aircraft's squadron.
