Education Ministry Appoints Prof. Najma Akhtar as Member of National Steering Committee

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar was appointed as a member of the National Steering Committee formed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India for the development of National Curriculum Frameworks.
The 12 member committee under the chairmanship of space scientist and former ISRO head K Kasturirangan will develop four National Curriculum Frameworks, i.e. the National Curriculum Framework for School Education, National Curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education, National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education and National Curriculum Framework for Adult Education.

K. Kasturirangan to Head Education Ministry's Panel to Develop School Curriculum

The Union education ministry formed a 12-member committee to develop new curriculums for school, early childhood, teacher and adult education.
The panel tasked with developing four national curriculum frameworks (NCFs) is headed by National Education Policy-2020 (NEP-2020) drafting committee chairperson K Kasturirangan.
Kasturirangan is also a former chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
This will be the fifth NCF, which will come after a gap of 16 years, and will be in accordance with reforms outlined in the NEP.
The members of the panel include Chancellor of National Institute of Education Planning and Administration, Mahesh Chandra Pant; Chairman of National Book Trust, Govind Prasad Sharma; Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Najma Akhtar; Vice Chancellor of Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh, T. V. Kattimani; Chairperson of IIM Jammu, Milind Kamble and guest professor at IIT Gandhinagar Michel Danino.

IIT-Guwathati Starts Special Centre to Aid R&D in Underwater Exploration

The Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati has started a specialised Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems (CICPS) to develop indigenous technologies and aid underwater exploration.
The CICPS will have major academic, human resources and technology development components with focus to develop products and technologies for underwater exploration which is an untouched (less explored) research area in the contour.
The centre will target developing a minimum of five technologies a year. As many as 13 Ph.D. students and 18 M.Tech students have already joined the CICPS and these students will particularly work on the technologies for underwater exploration.
IIT Guwahati will fund the center for the first five years, after which the Centre aims to be self-sustaining.

OP Jindal Global University Announces Soli J. Sorabjee Endowment Award, Scholarship for Law Students

OP Jindal Global University has established the Soli J. Sorabjee endowment award and scholarship. This award and scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student in the field of human rights law and theory, offered as part of the undergraduate programmes at the Jindal Global Law School.
The award will be announced on March 9 every year to coincide with the birth anniversary of Sorabjee. The award shall carry a scholarship, along with an award medal.
Soli Sorabjee was a champion of freedom of speech and expression and defended the right to freedom of speech and expression in many landmark cases that included the Kesavananda Bharti and the SR Bommai cases, in the Supreme Court of India. Therefore, the scholarship and award stand reminiscent of Soli Sorabjee's achievements and his contributions to Human Rights advocacy.

Justice AK Rajan Committee Recommends Immediate Elimination of NEET

A report submitted by retired Justice AK Rajan Committee on the impact of NEET, stated that NEET should be eliminated immediately.
The report submitted to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that if NEET continues for a few more years, it would affect the healthcare infrastructure of Tamil Nadu, bringing a shortage of doctors' appointments in primary health centres and government hospitals.
The report also stated that students from rural regions and poor backgrounds might lose access to medical education.

IISc Bangalore Student Invents Active Heart Preservation Container

The national winners for the James Dyson Awards 2021 were announced. The invention of LifeBox by Deval Karia from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore was adjudicated as the national winner for this year's edition.
The project LifeBox was developed with a vision to explore drones as a transport channel for organs. The inability to move hearts from donor to recipient quickly is a challenge that patients face in India. LifeBox tackles this problem with a system that extends the preservation time of the heart to allow for increased travel time and distances.
From a competitive pool of 77 entries evaluated by the jury led by Srijan Pal Singh, the CEO and Co-Founder of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre; LifeBox narrowly edged out the two runner-ups.
Safaa, an invention by Ananaya Singh and Vacha Patel, from the National Institute Of Design, Haryana; and Diariase; invented by Nikhil Das from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad to emerge as the national runner-ups from India.
The James Dyson Award runs in 28 countries and regions worldwide. Each national winner receives Rs. 1.90 lakh cash prize. Whereas the International winner receives a prize of Rs. 29 lakh plus Rs. 4,80,000 for the winner's university. The sustainability winner receives a prize of Rs. 29 lakh and two International runners-up receive Rs. 4.80 lakh.

IIT-Delhi Researchers Develop Device to Generate Electricity from Raindrops

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi researchers have designed a device that can generate electricity from water drops, raindrops, water streams, and ocean waves which can be stored in batteries for further use.
The device has been developed using "Triboelectric Effect" and "Electrostatic Induction". It is called "Liquid-solid Interface Triboelectric Nanogenerator".
The device has a very simple structure consisting of specially designed nanocomposite polymers and contact electrodes and can generate a few Milliwatt (mW) power, which is sufficient to power small electronic devices like watches, digital thermometers, radio frequency transmitters, healthcare sensors, pedometers. When compared to conventional methods, such as the use of the piezoelectric effect, the present device can generate significantly more electricity.

THE World University Subject-Wise Rankings 2022

The Times Higher Education (THE) has released the World University Subject-Wise Rankings 2022 for physical sciences, life sciences, psychology, and clinical and health sciences. More than 1,600 universities from 99 countries have been ranked in at least one discipline. The University of California takes first place in the physical sciences category, while Harvard University is at the top of the life sciences category.
Several Indian universities and institutions have made it to the 2022 ranking list. India's JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, placed in Rank 93, is the only institution to debut in the top 100 for clinical and health sciences.

'Ebola is Defeated', Says Congolese Professor Who Discovered the Virus

Ebola has been defeated. Vaccines and medical treatments have brought the deadly and terrifying disease under control, says Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the Congolese professor who first discovered the virus more than 40 years ago.
The 79-year-old virologist was speaking at a ceremony in the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital Kinshasa marking the arrival on the market of the "Ebanga" treatment, which was approved last December by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Government think tank NITI Aayog has partnered with Byju's, the world's most valuable edtech company with a valuation of $16.5 billion, to provide children from 112 aspirational districts of the country free access to Byju's high-quality and tech-driven learning programmes.
Byju's Career-Plus programme, under Aakash plus Byju's, will identify and provide high-quality test prep coaching to 3,000 meritorious students of classes 11 and 12 who aspire to appear for NEET and JEE.
