Major Changes Proposed in NCF

  • Draft recommendations for the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) propose major structural changes for students of Classes 9, 10 and 12 with respect to subject choice and the number of papers they need to appear for in the board exams.
  • Not only does it suggest that board exams be held twice a year, but it also suggests dividing all subjects into eight curricular areas to ensure students are able to build an overall knowledge base across different fields.
  • The NCF needs to be followed by both national boards, such as CBSE and CISCE, and state boards.
  • As per the draft recommendations of NCF, board examinations should be offered at least twice a year to ensure that students have both enough time and opportunity to perform well. Students can then appear for a board examination in courses they have completed and feel ready for.
  • This process could be made possible through the creation of a comprehensive test item bank which can be used to create tests using suitable software. This will enable the move towards a system of on-demand examinations in the near future as described in NEP 2020.
