Amartya Sen Wins 2020 Peace Prize of the German

  • Indian economist, philosopher and Nobel Laureate Amartya Kumar Sen (86) has been selected for 2020 Peace Prize by the Board of Trustees of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for his decades-long work around issues of global justice.
  • He will be presented with the award by German Publishers' and Booksellers' Association, Borsenverein in a ceremony that will take place on October 18, 2020, in Paulskirche (Germany).
  • Every year since 1950, the German Book Trade Peace Prize has been given. I addition to the title, the winner is also given a cash prize of €25,000 euros ($28,000).
  • Its goal is to honour those individuals who, with their outstanding work in the fields of literature, science and art, make a big contribution in making the ideas of peace come true.
  • In 2019, the award was presented to famous Brazilian photographer and photo journalist Sebastiao Ribeiro Salgado.
  • Professor Amartya Sen, who teaches at Harvard University in the US, has also been awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 for Economics.

Indian Startups Part of the World Economic Forum's List of Technology Pioneers of 2020

  • Two Indian startups Stellapps and Zestmoney were featured in the List of Technology Pioneers of 2020, released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) which consists of pioneers addressing the global issues with advanced technologies.
  • More than 25 industries in the list are led by females which is twice the industry average.

Deccan Development Society Wins Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Award

  • Hyderabad-based Deccan Development Society has won the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Award.
  • This honour is one of the most pined for natural honours on the planet for the year 2020.
  • The honour was declared by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Vice President and CEO, Olivier Wenden.
  • The honour of 40,000 Euros (roughly Rs 35 lakhs) has been given to the general public.

Film Made in Odisha Wins Award in COVID-19 Film Festival

  • Martyapura Re Jamaraj ('Yamaraj on earth'), a short film produced by a group from the Ankushpur village of Odisha's Ganjam district has won a special jury award at the COVID-19 International Film Festival 2020. The 13-minute short film in Odia seeks to spread awareness in rural areas on preventive measures to check the spread of the coronavirus through humour. The online festival of short films focused on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rattan Lal Wins 2020 World Food Prize

  • Renowned Indian-American soil scientist Dr. Rattan Lal was awarded the 2020 World Food Prize for developing and mainstreaming a soil-centric approach to increase food production that conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change.
  • US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, praised Lal, and said that Mr. Lal is helping nearly 500 million small farmers through improved management, less soil degradation, and recycling of nutrients.
  • Lal He received the $250,000 award for promoting soils for sustainable development.
