Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Awards 2020

A group of researchers from IIT Kharagpur was conferred the 'Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Awards 2020' for developing a mechanism for generating electricity from wet clothes left under sunlight to dry.
Another team from the institute was separately granted the same award for addressing the problem of energy conservation and thermal management in wearable and flexible electronic devices.
The 'Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Awards' was instituted by the Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institution (SRISTI), a voluntary organisation.
The GYTI Award celebrates the spirit of student innovation in all the fields of engineering, science, technology and design through extremely affordable/frugal solution or the ones pushing the technological edge.

Dipankar Wins Prem Bhatia Award for Journalism

The Indian Express Special Correspondent Dipankar Ghose won the Prem Bhatia Award for political reporting for his work on issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic, including the migrant labour crisis.
While Ghose won the award for the category of reporting on political issues, the award for reporting on environmental and development issues was given to the People's Archive of Rural India (PARI), a journalism website dedicated to reporting on rural India.
The Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust, which confers the awards for outstanding journalism, said in a press release that Ghose has been awarded for his coverage of the migrant labour crisis and other Covid-19 related issues.
Apart from reporting on the issue of migrant labour walking back hundreds of kilometres to their home towns during the lockdown, Ghose also reported a series of stories from Bhagalpur in Bihar for over a month starting mid-June to understand the effects of the pandemic and the lockdown in small-town India.

Ministry of Tribal Affairs Receives SKOCH Gold Award

SKOCH Gold Award was awarded to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) for its "Empowerment of Tribals through IT enabled Scholarship Schemes" project. The project was launched to show Government of India's commitment to realize the dreams of Digital India and bringing transparency as well as ease in the delivery of services. MoTA integrated the 5 Scholarship Schemes with DBT Portal under the guidance of DBT Mission in order to align with the larger vision of 'Digital India'.
The 66th SKOCH 2020 Competition was held with name "INDIA RESPONDS TO COVID THROUGH DIGITAL GOVERNANCE". The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) participated in the DIGITAL INDIA & E-GOVERNANCE-2020 Competition.

Guinness World Records Awards Certificate to Shakuntala Devi for 'Fastest Human Computation'

Guinness World Records honoured Indian math genius Shakuntala Devi with the long overdue record title for 'fastest human computation', four decades after she achieved the feat.
The fastest human computation is 28 seconds and was achieved by Shakuntala Devi by successfully multiplying two randomly selected 13-digit numbers, at Imperial College London, UK, in June 1980.
The certification was received by Anupama Banerji, daughter of the late mathematician.
Banerji said that she was barely 10 when her mother made the world record.

India's First Solar-powered Ferry 'Aditya' Wins Global Honour

'Aditya', India's first solar-powered ferry that commenced operations in 2017 in Kerala's Vembanad backwaters, has won the prestigious Gustave Trouve Award for Excellence in Electric Boats and Boating. The ferry was adjudged the world's best electric boat in the category of ferries designed for paid passenger service.
The awards, handed out for the first time, is the world's only such honour given to individuals and companies building and innovating in state-of-the-art electric boats. It was instituted this year in honour of Frenchman Gustave Trouve for his groundbreaking work in mobility based on electric transport, moving away from conventional fossil fuels. In 1881, he invented the world's first outboard motor, connecting it to a rechargeable battery to sail a boat down the Seine River in silence.
Aditya, the only one shortlisted from Asia among 12 ferries in the world after a rigorous audit process, entered the finals with six contestants in the first week of July through public voting. It was declared the winner in July.
The ferry belongs to the Kerala State Water Transport Department (KSWTD).

Ministry of Earth Sciences Announces the National Awards for Excellence in Earth System Science

The Ministry of Earth Sciences announced the National Awards for excellence in Earth System Science. The Ministry awarded the Lifetime Excellence Award 2020 to Professor Ashok Sahni for his major contribution in the field of Biostratigraphy, Geology and Vertebrate Paleontology.
The Ministry has always aimed at providing due platform and recognition to the major scientific contributions that have been made by the eminent engineers and scientists in various fields of Earth System Sciences.
The National Award for the Ocean Science and Technology was awarded to Dr. V.V.S.S. Sharma. He is a Senior Principle Scientist at CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography at Vishakhapatnam.
M. Ravichandran, Director of National centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa was also awarded the National Award for Ocean Science and Technology.
The National Award for the Atmospheric Science and Technology by the Ministry of Earth Sciences was presented to Dr. S. Suresh Babu.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences is mandated to provide the nation with the best possible services for climate, weather, ocean, coastal and natural hazards for the socio-economic benefits or public safety.
