President of India Presents Swachh Survekshan Awards 2022

  • The Union government's annual awards for the cleanest cities were handed out by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • The Swachh Survekshan 2022, or cleanliness survey that is part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, covered 100% of municipal wards for sampling this time — a first — as opposed to 40% in previous years. Over 160 awards across various categories were presented.
  • Indore was adjudged the cleanest city for the sixth time in a row followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai with populations of above one lakh. Panchgani in Maharashtra, Patan in Chhattisgarh, and Karad, Maharashtra bagged the top three awards in the cleanest cities category with a population of below one lakh.

Writer-academic Madhav Hada to be Awarded 32nd Bihari Puraskar

  • Writer Dr. Madhav Hada wouldl be awarded the 32nd Bihari Puraskar for his 2015 literary criticism book 'Pachrang Chola Pahar Sakhi Ri', the KK Birla Foundation announced.
  • The Bihari Puraskar is one of the three literary awards instituted by the foundation in 1991. Named after famous Hindi poet Bihari, the award is given every year for an outstanding work published in the last 10 years by a Rajasthani author in Hindi or Rajasthani. It carries a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, a plaque and a citation. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee headed by chairman Hemant Shesh.
  • A literary critic and academic, Hada has written extensively on literature, media, culture and history. He has also been a member of the general council of the Sahitya Akademi and the Hindi Advisory Board. He has been a recipient of the Bhartendu Harishchandra Award for Media Studies and the Devraj Upadhyay Award for Literary Criticism.

Valley of Words Book Awards: 'Tagore & Gandhi' Wins in English non-fiction

  • Anees Salim's The Odd Book of Baby Names (English fiction) and Rudrangshu Mukherjee's Tagore & Gandhi: Walking Alone, Walking Together (English non-fiction) were among the eight that were adjudged the best books of the year at the 'Valley of Words Book Awards'. The PFC-VoW Book Awards is considered one of the most comprehensive independent literary award programmes in India.

President Droupadi Murmu Present 68th National Film Awards

  • President Droupadi Murmu presented the 68th National Film Awards in New Delhi. Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2020 was given to legendary actress Asha Parekh for her exemplary lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema.
  • The best Feature Film award was given to Tamil film Soorarai Pottru. Hindi film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior' got Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
  • Dangi language non-feature film Testimony of Ana was given an award for Best Non-Feature Film. Marathi Film Funeral was awarded Best Film on Social Issues.
  • Ajay Devgan and Suriya was given the Best Actor award for films Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Soorarai Pottru. Aparna Balamurali was given the Best Actress Award for Soorarai Pottru. Sachidanandan KR was given the Best Director Award for Malayalam Film AK Ayyappanum Koshiyum. Marathi Film Sumi was given an award for Best Children's Film.

Women's Rights Activist Srishti Bakshi wins 'Changemaker' Award at UN SDG Action Awards

  • Srishti Bakshi, a women's rights activist from India, who travelled 3,800 km through the length of the country in less than a year to raise awareness on gender-based violence and inequality, has won a prestigious honour at the UN SDG Action Awards.
  • Srishti, marketer-turned-women's-rights-activist, was honoured with the 'Changemaker' award at the UN SDG Action Awards for "confronting gender-based violence and advocating for safe access to public spaces."
  • Bakshi embarked on an on-foot pilgrimage of 3,800 kilometers through 12 Indian states from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, not only to put a spotlight on the causes of violence against women, but also to empower women and reveal stories of resilience by conducting over 100 workshops focused on women's safety, along with digital and financial literacy.

Kumar Sanu, Shailendra Singh, Anand-Milind Get Lata Mangeshkar Award

  • Noted playback singers Kumar Sanu and Shailendra Singh and music-composer duo Anand-Milind were conferred with the National Lata Mangeshkar Award on the birth anniversary of the late singing legend at her birthplace in Indore.
  • State Culture Minister Usha Thakur conferred Singh, Anand-Milind and Sanu with the award for the year 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively.
  • Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that in order to keep Mangeshkar's memories alive, a music college, a music academy and a museum will be set up in Indore, and her statue will also be built.

Cochin International Airport Awarded for Ensuring Seamless Traffic Post COVID-19

  • The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) won the Airport Service Quality award-2022 instituted by Airport Council International (ACI) for ensuring seamless traffic in the aftermath of the pandemic. As per CIAL, the award was given for its meticulous implementation of a programme christened 'Mission Safeguarding' implemented in 2021-22 which ensured seamless traffic and reinforced passenger satisfaction in the aftermath of the pandemic.
  • The Airport Authority has won recognition in the 5-15 million passenger category of airports operating in the Asia-Pacific region. The ACI award is recognised as the highest honour in the global aviation sector owing to its extensive survey methodology practices.

Asha Parekh to be Bestowed with 52nd Dadasaheb Phalke Award

  • Veteran actress Asha Parekh was declared the recipient of the 2020 Dadasaheb Phalke Award, making her the 52nd awardee of the honour. Union Minister for Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur announced her name. She worked in more than 95 films and was the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification from 1998-2001. She is also a recipient of the Padma Shri, awarded to her by the Government of India in 1992 for services to cinema.
  • Asha Parekh started her career as a child actoress and was cast by filmmaker Bimal Roy in Maa (1952) when she was 10. After a few films, the actor took a break to complete her education and returned as the lead actress in writer-director Nasir Hussain's Dil Deke Dekho (1959), which also starred Shammi Kapoor.
  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest honour in Indian cinema. The award was instituted in 1969. Previous recipients include Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Lata Mangeshkar, Mrinal Sen, Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna. Devika Rani was the first winner, while actor Rajinikanth is the most recent winner of the prestigious honour, in 2021.

UP Gets Centre's Award for Adding over 28,000 Facilities to National Health Register

  • Uttar Pradesh was awarded the 'Ayushman Utkrishta Award 2022' at the Aarogya Manthan programme held in Delhi for adding various facilities to the National Health Facility Register.
  • Uttar Pradesh has opened around two crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA), making it the second state in the nation to do so.
  • Sharing data, the government said that UP was the best performing state in the nation after it added 28,728 new health facilities to the National Health Facility Register.
  • According to a government release, Karnataka ranked second with 23,838 healthcare facilities, followed by Andhra Pradesh (13,335), Maharashtra (12,902), Bihar (12,453); Madhya Pradesh (12,268); West Bengal (11,607), Chhattisgarh (9,349), Telangana (7,988), and Gujarat (7,791).
