Assam Celebrates Lachit Divas

  • Lachit Divas (Lachit Day) is celebrated annually in the Indian state of Assam on November 24, to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary Ahom army general Lachit Borphukan. Lachit Borphukan was born on 24 November 1622 in Charaideo and is known for his military intelligence in the Battle of Saraighat.
  • Every year, since 1999, the 'Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal' is awarded to the best cadet passing-out from the National Defence Academy. The 'Mahabir Lachit Award' is given by the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad in Assam to notable personalities. The cash prize of Rs 50000 and a sword is presented under this award.
  • The Battle of Saraighat was fought between the Ram Singh-led Mughal army and the Lachit Borphukan-led Ahom army in the year 1671 on the banks of the Brahmaputra river. Chao Lachit was the Borphukan (Army general) of the Ahom army. Ram Singh, the elder son of Amber ruler Mirza Raja Jai Singh, was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to invade the Ahom kingdom. The Mughal army was larger and powerful than the Ahom army, but Lachit, with his powerful use of terrain, leadership skills and Guerrilla warfare saved Saraighat from the Mughal invasion, present-day in Guwahati. He died a natural death in April 1672 in Jorhat, and his remains are present in the Lachit Maidan near Jorhat.

Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurates ISRO's five-day Technology Conclave-21

  • Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated ISRO's five-day Technology Conclave-2021 and highlighted the Futuristic and Disruptive Technologies to be developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO.
  • The conclave is being organized by the Directorate of Technology Development and Innovation, DTDI under the aegis of ISRO.

Fifth East Asia Summit (EAS) Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation

  • The fifth EAS Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation will be held in Kolkata on 23-24 November 2021.
  • The event is being organized by India in partnership with Australia. Apart from the two governments, organizers include the ASEAN-India Centre (AIC) at Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) in collaboration with National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and the Research Centre for East and North East Regional Studies, Kolkata (CENERS-K).

World Television Day

  • World Television Day is observed on November 21 to highlight the daily value of television that it plays in communication and globalisation.
  • On 21 November and 22 November, 1996, the U.N. held the first World Television Forum. It provides a platform and allowed the media to discuss the importance of TV in delivering information and also how it participating in the changing world. It is the single largest source of video consumption.
  • Therefore, UN General Assembly on 17 December 1996 through resolution 51/205 established 21 November as World Television Day to commemorate the date on which World Television Forum was held.

World Fisheries Day

  • World Fisheries Day is celebrated on November 21 every year throughout the world by the fisherfolk communities. It highlights the importance of healthy oceans ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world. 2020 is the fourth World Fisheries Day.
  • The World Fisheries Day helps in highlighting the critical importance to human lives, of water and the lives it sustains, both in and out of water. Water forms a continuum, whether contained in rivers, lakes, and ocean. Fishing communities worldwide celebrate this day through rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural programs, dramas, exhibition, music show, and demonstrations to highlight the importance of maintaining the world's fisheries.

International Children's Day

  • World Children's Day is observed annually on November 20 to commemorate the day of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on the same day in 1959. The day is celebrated globally to promote the rights of children besides improving their standard of living. It also promotes international togetherness and raises awareness among children to improve their welfare.
  • Though Children's Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries, International Children's Day is a global observance that is marked on November 20.

International Men's Day

  • November 19 is International Men's Day (IMD).
  • The day honours the positive contributions that men make to the world, their households, and their societies. The day also promotes positive role models and spreads awareness about men's wellness.
  • Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh established IMD in 1999. He taught history at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. In honour of his father's birthday, Teelucksingh chose November 19. He encouraged people to use this day to convey issues that affect boys and men.
  • There are six pillars of International Men's Day, and one of them focuses on improving gender relations and promoting gender equality for men and women alike. "Better relations between men and women" is the theme for International Men's Day 2021.

National Integration Day

  • National Integration Day is a day for promoting peace, unity, and integration between all of the different segments of society living in India. Indira Gandhi's birthday was chosen as a day to celebrate as she is seen as somebody who embodies the good intentions of the holiday.
  • Gandhi became India's first female Prime Minister in 1966 and stayed in the role for 11 years. She played a major role in strengthening democratic structure and tradition in the country. She won the war with Pakistan in 1971 and signed a subsequent peace treaty.
  • After losing her battle for reelection in 1977 she was ousted from her role as Prime Minister, only to be voted back in again in 1980. Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by two of her own bodyguards at her home in New Delhi.
  • National Integration Day was created in her honor as a way to encourage all Indians to integrate, regardless of race or religion.
