Out for Drill, Indonesian Submarine Goes Missing

Indonesian Navy is searching for a submarine with 53 people on board that lost contact and is seeking help from neighbouring Australia and Singapore in the hunt.
The submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali but failed to relay the results as expected.
The 1,395-tonne KRI Nanggala-402 was built in Germany in 1978, according to the Indonesian cabinet secretariat's website, and underwent a two-year refit in South Korea that was completed in 2012.

BAE Launches UK Navy's Fifth Astute-Class Attack Submarine

BAE Systems has launched the UK Royal Navy's fifth Astute-class nuclear submarine, Anson, at its Barrow-in-Furness site in Cumbria.
The company is building a total of seven Astute-class boats for the service.
In December last year, the fifth Astute-class nuclear submarine was named Anson in a virtual ceremony.
The 97 m-long, 7,400t submarine will now move forward with the next phase of its test and commissioning programme. It will leave for sea trials in 2022.
The Astute-class boats are capable of 'circumnavigating the globe submerged, producing their own oxygen and drinking water'.
All these boats feature advanced nuclear technology and never require to be refuelled.

India Likely to Step-up Military Training and Assistance for Afghanistan

India is likely to step-up military training and assistance to Afghanistan, even as US troops are set to withdraw from the war-ravaged country later this year.
As per reports, steps to enhance bilateral defence cooperation were discussed in a meeting between Army Chief General M. M. Naravane and Afghan ambassador Farid Mamundzay.
India has over the years supplied military hardware, including four Mi-25 armed helicopters, to Afghanistan as well as trained thousands of its military personnel in counter-terrorism operations, military field-craft, intelligence-gathering and information technology, among other fields.

Indian Navy's First Unit of Indigenously-built Advanced Light Helicopters Enters Service

Indian Naval Air Squadron 323 (INAS 323), Navy's first unit of the indigenously-built Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk III, was commissioned at INS Hansa, Goa.
The squadron will operate three state-of-the-art ALH Mk III helicopters — a multi-role chopper with the Shakti engine manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The Mk III version of the ALH has an all glass cockpit and will be used for search and rescue, special operations and coastal surveillance. Six ALHs are under procurement and all the aircraft are being delivered in a phased manner.

The 8th Indo-Kyrgyz Special Forces Exercise 'Khanjar' Flags off

The 8th Indo-Kyrgyz Joint Special Forces Exercise "Khanjar" was inaugurated at the Special Forces Brigade of National Guards of the Kyrgyz Republic in Bishkek, the capital of the host Kyrgyzstan. Initiated first in 2011, the two-week-long special operations exercise focusses on high-altitude warfare, mountain warfare and counter-extremism exercises.
The Indian contingent for the exercise and felicitated their role as a bridge in promoting the shared mountain and nomadic heritage of both nations. A ceremonial parade graced the occasion along with a display of equipment's and weapons and a visit to the training arena and barracks.

Russia's Plan to Restrict Foreign Warships near Crimea Will Keep Kerch Strait Open

Russia's plan to temporarily restrict movement of foreign warships in part of the Black Sea will not affect the nearby Kerch Strait, signalling lower risks for regional trade from Russia-Ukraine tensions.
The Kerch Strait is a crucial part of the regional grain trade connecting the Azov Sea with the Black Sea. The area is also close to military drills which Moscow and Kyiv held simultaneously this week.
