New Super-Earth with 617-Day Year Discovered

  • The discovery of a new, so-called "super-Earth" has just been announced by researchers, and it's about four times the mass of our home planet.
  • The discovery of the super-Earth was made thanks to an astronomical phenomenon known as gravitational microlensing.
  • And while the planet probably isn't habitable, that phenomenon is still an incredible manifestation of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
  • The discovery of the new super-Earth, dubbed OGLE-2018-BLG-0677, was outlined in a paper recently published in The Astronomical Journal.
  • The researchers involved with the study, including lead authors Dr. Antonio Herrera Martin and Associate Professor Michael Albrow, both at the University of Canterbury (UC) in New Zealand, made their discovery using a network of telescopes from across the globe.

  • India's space agency will tap startups to develop food and medicines for astronauts, better tools to access machines in a spacecraft and green engines for its maiden humanspace flight Gaganyaan-1.
  • It will also potentially help them build products and solutions that they can exploit commercially.
  • Isro identified a set of 17 technologies that it invited researchers to develop locally at lower costs for use in its Gaganyaan missions.

ARCI Scientists Develop Next-Generation Biodegradable Metal Implants

  • Scientists at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram both autonomous institutes under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) have jointly developed new generation Iron-Manganese based alloys for biodegradable metal implants for use in humans.
  • Biodegradable materials (Fe, Mg, Zn, and polymer), which can participate in the healing process and then degrade gradually by maintaining the mechanical integrity without leaving any implant residues in the human body are better alternatives to currently used metallic implants which remain permanently in the human body and can cause long-term side effects like systemic toxicity, chronic inflammation, and thrombosis.

DST INSPIRE Develops Lightweight Carbon Foam That can Replace Lead Batteries

  • INSPIRE under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India has developed porous carbon materials that have the potential to replace the lead grid in lead-acid batteries.
  • The carbon foam was developed by Dr. Rajeev Kumar from CSIR-Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute, Bhopal, a recipient of the INSPIRE Faculty Award. 
  • The carbon foams are non-toxic, easy to fabricate, affordable, and insoluble in water. 

CERT-In Warns of Mobile Banking Android Malware 'EventBot

  • A mobile banking malware called "EventBot", which steals personal financial information, may affect Android phone users in India, the federal cyber-security agency has said in an advisory.
  • The CERT-In has issued a caution, saying the Trojan virus may "masquerade as a legitimate application such as Microsoft Word, Adobe flash and others using third-party application downloading sites to infiltrate into victim device".
  • A Trojan is a virus or malware that cheats a victim to stealthily attack its computer or phone-operating system.

JNCASR Develop Injectable Silk Fibroin-based Hydrogel for Sustained Insulin Delivery

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) has developed an injectable Silk fibroin-based hydrogel for sustained insulin delivery in diabetic patients. 
  • The injectable Silk fibroin-based hydrogel is developed using the biocompatible additives, The injectable SF hydrogel (iSFH) can ease insulin delivery in diabetic patients.
  • The injection was tested on diabetic rats.

South Africa's MeerKAT Solves Mystery of 'X-galaxies'

  • Many galaxies far more active than the Milky Way have enormous twin jets of radio waves extending far into intergalactic space. Normally these go in opposite directions, coming from a massive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. However, a few are more complicated and appear to have four jets forming an 'X' on the sky.
  • Exquisite new MeerKAT observations of one such galaxy, PKS 2014-55, strongly favor the latter explanation as they show material "turning the corner" as it flows back towards the host galaxy; the results have just been accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
  • This work was carried out by a team from the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), the (US) National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), the University of Pretoria, and Rhodes University.

Astronomers Discover 'One in a Million' Super-Earth

  • Astronomers at the University of Canterbury (UC) have found a new "one in a million" Super-Earth planet towards the genre of the galaxy.
  • The planet-hunters' research has been published in The Astronomical Journal, which states that the size and orbit of this planet are comparable to that of Earth.
  • The newly discovered planet is among only a handful of extra-solar planets that have been detected with both sizes and orbits close to that of Earth.

China Launches Two Satellites to Test Space Based Communication Technology

  • On 12th May 2020, China launches two satellites Xingyun-2 01 and 02 into the orbit by Kuaizhou-1A (KZ-1A) carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the northwest China, to test the space-based Internet of Things (IoT) communication technology.
  • The Satellite was developed by Xingyun Satellite Co. to conduct tests on technologies including space-based IoT communications, inter-satellite laser communications and a low-cost commercial satellite platform.
  • Kuaizhou(KZ-1A) is a low-cost, solid-fuel carrier rocket featuring high orbit precision and a short preparation period.
  • The Rocket is developed by an affiliated company of Sanjiang Group under the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) used to launch low-orbit small satellites.
