Lithium Reserves Found in Jammu and Kashmir

Lithium reserves were found for the first time in the country in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and is one of the key components in EV batteries.
Lithium reserves were found in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, during exploration by the Geological Survey of India (GSI).
India is dependent on import for many minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt.

Odisha Reports 578 Forest Fires over the Last Week, the Highest in the Country

Odisha reported 578 incidents of fire in Odisha's forests over the week between February 1 and February 8, 2023, the highest in the country, according to the Forest Survey of India's (FSI) fire alerts system based on Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP). Another 541 fires were reported from Madhya Pradesh and 463 in Karnataka.
"The incidents of wildfires in the state are increasing at an alarming rate. If we experience a long dry spell, it may increase to over a thousand cases by April," said Odisha's principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) Debidutta Biswal.

Millions Face Threat of Flooding from Glacial Lakes

According to a new study, up to 15 million people face risk of catastrophic flooding from glacial lakes which could burst their natural dams at any moment.
The study led by Newcastle University is the first global attempt to map potential hotspots for such floods.
As the climate warms, glaciers retreat and melt-water collects, forming lakes.
The impact of global warming on glacial lake floods is yet to be defined, but it has increased both the volume and number of glacial lakes worldwide.

RIL, Ashok Leyland Unveil First Hydrogen Combustion Driven Heavy Duty Truck

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL) and Ashok Leyland unveiled India's first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered heavy duty truck. The vehicle was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru at the India Energy Week.
Ashok Leyland, the Indian flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, along with RIL, has been developing this unique technology over the past year and has been under test since August 2022. The Ashok Leyland H2-ICE heavy-duty truck range (19-35 Tonne) is powered by hydrogen, a renewable and clean energy source.

Bhupender Yadav Launches 'Save Wetlands Campaign' for Conservation

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav launched the 'Save Wetlands Campaign' in the presence of Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant.
This campaign is structured on a "whole of society" approach to wetlands conservation, enabling affirmative actions for wetlands conservation at all levels of society and involving all strata of society. The campaign, over the next year, will include sensitizing people to the value of wetlands, increasing the coverage of wetlands and building citizen partnerships for wetlands conservation.
Two publications were also released during the occasion, 'India's 75 Amrit Dharohar- India's Ramsar Sites Factbook' and 'Managing Climate Risks in Wetlands – A Practitioner's Guide.
