Delhi Airport Ranks among World's Busiest Airports for 2023

  • The Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi was among the top 10 busiest airports in the world, according to new rankings released by the Airports Council International (ACI).
  • Catering to 72.2 million passengers in the year 2023, the IGI airport was ranked number 10 on the list.
  • The top ten airports in the list are: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Dubai International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Heathrow Airport (LHR), Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND), Denver International Airport (DEN), Istanbul Airport (IST), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

Bengaluru International Airport Records Highest Passenger Traffic in FY23

  • Kempegowda International Airport witnessed the highest-ever annual passenger traffic and cargo numbers, with a total of 37.53 million passengers traversing through its terminals and 4,39,524 metric tonne of cargo passing through the airport during the financial year 2023-24.
  • The airport catered to 32.86 million domestic and 4.67 million international passengers during this period.

Air India, BIAL Sign Agreement to Develop Bengaluru Airport as Hub

  • Air India and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) signed a pact to develop the Bengaluru airport as an aviation hub, encompassing the construction of a dedicated domestic lounge, expansion of international services, and establishment of a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility.
  • Air India (along with other Tata Group airlines – AIX and Vistara) and BIAL will collaborate to enhance international connectivity, operational efficiency, and passenger experience over the next five years.
  • Air India is wholly owned by the Tata Group, while AIX Connect and Air India Express are its wholly-owned subsidiaries. Vistara, a 51:49 joint venture between the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, is currently undergoing a merger into Air India. The Bengaluru airport is operated by Fairfax-run BIAL.

Manohar International Airport in Goa Launches Digi Yatra System

  • The Manohar International Airport in Mopa, Goa, became the 14th airport in India to launch the Digi Yatra system. This biometric-enabled system uses facial recognition technology to automate the entry and verification of passengers at various airport checkpoints, making the travel experience more seamless and convenient. The Digi Yatra system is already operational in 13 other Indian airports, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai, among others.
  • The Digi Yatra system allows passengers to link their Aadhaar number to a Digi Yatra ID on their mobile app. At the airport, they can simply scan their boarding pass, and the facial recognition system will confirm their identity, allowing them to proceed through security and boarding without manual checks.
  • This system aims to reduce waiting times, quicken processing times, and simplify procedures for passengers. It is an initiative of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to make air travel more secure and hassle-free.

  • MakeMyTrip and Singapore Tourism Board entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to encourage Singapore as a key destination for Indian travellers.
  • Singapore Tourism Board and MakeMyTrip will collaborate on initiatives and campaigns aimed at increasing inbound travel to Singapore in 2024. Singapore's tourism board will also leverage MakeMyTrip's market expertise to create exclusive holiday packages tailored for Indian consumers.
