Vienna Opera House Stages First Opera by Woman

  • In a historic moment, Olga Neuwirth's Orlando is all set to become the first Opera to be opened by a woman. Staged at the Vienna opera house was Olga's adaption of Virginia Woolf's Orlando.
  • The piece reportedly deals with duality and trans identity. Over its 150 years of existence, the Vienna State Opera has seen several star performers and has also experienced unique historic moments in its incredible musical journey.
  • However, the one significant accomplishment it was yet to fulfil is staging an opera that was written by a woman.

Ancient Site Older than Göbeklitepe Unearthed

  • The latest archeologic excavations in southeastern Turkey discovered an ancient site older than Göbeklitepe, known as the oldest temple in the world.
  • İbrahim Özcoşar, the rector of Mardin Artuklu University, said that the discoveries at Boncuklu Tarla (Beaded Field) in the southeastern province of Mardin resemble those unearthed in Göbeklitepe, an archeological site located in the southeastern Şanlıurfa province, and even 1,000 years older.
  • The excavation work began in 2012 at the Boncuklu Tarla in Dargeçit district that dates back to the Neolithic period.
  • The area is known to have been home throughout history to the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans, Seljuks, and Ottomans, among others.
  • This area is important in terms of being one of the first settled areas of humanity and shows that the first people to have settled here were believers.

ORI Project to Digitise Manuscripts Regains Traction

  • The Oriental Research Institute (ORI) in the city which is a treasure trove of ancient palm leaf manuscripts enshrining a slice of ancient India's knowledge base will seek the assistance of National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) for digitisation and preservation of the priceless heritage.
  • The University of Mysore under which the ORI functions, consented to ORI collaborating with the NMM for the digitisation and conservation project at a meeting. Hemantha Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, UoM, said that the project will not cost the varsity anything as the NMM was keen to fund it.
  • ORI said that the institute had an agreement with the NMM and used to receive funds for conservation. But once the agreement period lapsed, it was not renewed for almost 5 years. It will now be revived. A MoU will be signed with NMM but finer details as to the nature of NMM's assistance or collaboration will be spelt out later.
  • With this development, the ORI's long-pending project of digitization of manuscripts will receive fresh traction. The digitization of manuscripts is expected to give a fillip to Indological studies as the e-version of the manuscripts will be available online for reference.

Boycott of Sangai Festival to Continue

  •  Notwithstanding the hour-long talk in New Delhi on November 25 between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the 18-member team from Manipur representing several civil organnisations, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) formed by five organisations announced that the boycott of the international Sangai festival underway in Imphal would continue.
  • The COCOMI has been quarterbacking various forms of agitations demanding protection of Manipur's integrity after signing the Naga pact. It has also announced its opposition to the Citizens (Amendment) Bill, 2016, contending that the indigenous people will be swamped by outsiders once the Bill was enacted.

Sonepur Mela 2019

  •  While we are mostly attending events and fairs in big cities, parts of rural India also have some fascinating fairs, or as the locals call them, melas. The Sonepur Mela 2019 is one such fair, promising a wholly different experience to anyone who would like to see the other side of India. The festival is a mix of entertainment, animal trade, spirituality, and more, with thousands of performers and visitors coming in each day.
  • Also known as the Sonepur Cattle Fair, this is the biggest cattle fair in India and attracts visitors from across Asia. It can be traced back to the 4th century BC, to the Mauryan Empire. According to historical records, the festival was not always held here at Sonepur. It was during the rule of Aurangzeb that the venue got shifted to Sonepur.
  • Sonepur is also home to the Harihar Nath Temple, which is believed to have been built by Lord Rama himself. Then, there is also a legend that says Lord Vishnu had intervened to end a discord between a crocodile and an elephant, and this fair commemorates that event.
