IIM Lucknow Hosts 'Sanrakshan 2024', Focusing on Sustainable Business Practices

The Indian Institute of Management, IIM Lucknow hosted 'Sanrakshan 2024', its flagship Business Sustainability Conclave. The two-day conclave centred around the theme 'Building Resilient Businesses through Sustainability', brought together thought leaders, industry experts, and academics to address the critical challenges and opportunities in sustainable business practices.
The conclave was graced by Ansuman Patnaik, Director General, of the Competition Commission of India, who served as the chief guest.
Organised jointly by IIM Lucknow's PGP-Sustainable Management and the Centre for Business Sustainability, the conclave began with inaugural addresses from Professor Dipti Gupta, Chairperson, PGP-Sustainable Management, and Professor Kaushik Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Chairperson, Centre for Business Sustainability. Both highlighted the increasing importance of integrating sustainability into core business strategies.
A key highlight of the conclave was the 'Start-up Mela,' where entrepreneurs and innovators presented cutting-edge solutions for sustainable innovation. These startups, at the forefront of sustainability, showcased groundbreaking technologies and approaches poised to redefine the future of business.

Manhattan College is now Manhattan University

Manhattan College in New York City, the US announced that it changed its name to Manhattan University. The NYS Board of Regents approved the name change.
The change of name is done in order to better recognise its more than 100 majors, minors, graduate programmes, and advanced certificates and degrees, and attract a more globally diverse student body to this premiere higher educational institution.
The institute was founded in 1853 in Manhattan as a Lasallian Catholic College. Manhattan College relocated to the Bronx in 1923.

IIT Madras Hosts Quantum Tech Leaders at QCMC 2024 in India

The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras is hosting the 16th International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement, and Computing (QCMC 2024) from August 26 to 30, 2024, marking the first time this prestigious event is held in India. The conference, organised by the Centre for Quantum Information, Communication, and Computing (CQuICC), a Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras, is taking place at the IIT Madras Research Park.
Established in 1990, QCMC is one of the most renowned global platforms for experts in quantum information science and technology, bringing together leading scientists and engineers to discuss advancements in quantum computing, communication, cryptography, and sensing. The 2024 conference is supported by IIT Madras, Mphasis F1 Foundation, and KLA.

Education Ministry Directs States to Implement School Safety Guidelines

The Ministry of Education urged all States and Union Territories to implement the 'Guidelines on School Safety and Security-2021' to improve the protection of children in educational institutions. This directive follows orders from the Supreme Court in Writ Petitions (Criminal) No. 136 of 2017 and (Civil) No. 874 of 2017.
Aligned with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the guidelines aim to establish clear accountability for school management across government, government-aided, and private schools. Key components include preventive education, reporting procedures, legal provisions, support services, and fostering a safe learning environment.
Initially circulated on October 1, 2021, the guidelines are advisory and allow states the flexibility to adapt them to local needs. They emphasise a 'Zero Tolerance Policy' towards any negligence related to child safety.

To Boost Research, Cabinet Clears Vigyan Dhara, Biotech Initiatives

The Centre approved two key science initiatives to strengthen the research base and accelerate search for science and technology solutions to some of the country's pressing needs in sectors like clean energy.
The Union Cabinet decided to merge several existing science promotion programmes being run by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under a new initiative called Vigyan Dhara that, it hopes, would result in better fund utilisation, and improve efficiency. It also approved a biotechnology initiative that will push for research and development, industrialisation and manufacturing in the biotechnology sector.
Vigyan Dhara has three broad components — human and institutional capacity building, research and development, innovation and technology development, and also deployment. The existing schemes would fall under one of these components.

IIM-Bangalore Sets up Centre of Excellence on PE and Venture Capital

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM-B) signed a memorandum of understanding with Florintree Advisors Private Limited to set up a Global Centre of Excellence, the Tony James Centre for private equity and Venture Capital at the Institute.
The aim is to create an ecosystem wherein academics, practitioners, and regulators collaborate to develop and nurture private equity and venture capital talent.

South Indian Adivasi Knowledge Centre Launched in B.R. Hills

South India's first adivasi library, 'Kaanu', was inaugurated at B.R. Hills in Chamarajanagar district in the state of Karnataka. 'Kaanu' means evergreen forest in Soliga language. It is the first South Indian Adivasi Knowledge Centre.
There is no institution dedicated for research on various aspects related to adivasis in South India.
Scholars from tribal communities held talks with Prashanth N. Srinivas, a medical doctor and public health researcher at BR Hills, and Wraner from Germany last year (2023) and decided to set up this exclusive library to showcase works and promote research on Jenu Kuruba, Kadu Kuruba, Betta Kuruba, Soliga and other forest-based tribes.

CBSE Collaborates with ISTM for Trainers Certification Course for Board's Resource Persons

The Central Board of Secondary Education joined hands with the Institute of Secretariat Training and Management (ISTM) under the Dept. of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the government of India to impart a two-day certificate course on the training of trainers.
The development aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) which stipulates 50 hours of continuous professional development for all teachers and head teachers. Under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, CBSE is targeting to train nearly 15000 Resource Persons (RPs) in several batches.
The course is designed with the core components of the Direct Trainers Skills (DTS) and Design of Training (DoT) and the Integrated Approaches to Child and Adolescent Development.

Education Ministry Launches Second Cycle of Learning Disability Training Programme

The Ministry of Education (MoE) launched the second cycle of its capacity-building programme on specific learning disability (SLD) under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP).
The programme is intended to equip higher educational institutions (HEIs) with the skills and knowledge necessary to support students with specific learning disabilities. The second cycle of the program will run until December 2024, with sessions being held both online and in-person with a new set of identified HEIs.

Dhanuja Kumari, the Sanitation Worker Whose Book is Now in University Courses

Dhanuja Kumari, a sanitation worker from Kerala, defied all odds and became an author whose work is now included in the curriculum for BA students at Kannur University and MA students at Calicut University.
Dhanuja still walks the narrow streets of Ravi Nagar in Ambalamukku, collecting plastic waste while carrying a bright smile. Her book, 'Chengalchoolayile Ente Jeevitham' ('My Life in Chengalchoola'), chronicles her challenging life.
Dhanuja's book has received significant recognition, with its inclusion in the curriculum of BA and MA courses.
Her second book, which she is currently working on, will continue to reflect her personal experiences.
