Jharkhand Launches Programme to Increase Attendance in Schools

In an attempt to bring back students skipping classes for over a month, the Department of School Education and Literacy of Jharkhand launched a unique programme 'Prayas -Siti bajao, school bulao' (blow whistle, call students to school).
A government school in Tangrain, in Potka block of East Singhbhum district implemented 'Siti bajao, Upsthithi badao' (blow whistle, increase attendance) in line with the government programme and the response was good.
Blow whistle' campaign launched in villages surrounding the school evoked a good response as students, who were absent for almost a month have started attending school as soon as they hear the whistle sound.
Considering the constructive response of the programme, the education and literacy department launched it in all government schools across the state.

University Principals Accountable for Extreme Ragging Cases: New Regulations

Continuing its anti-ragging drive, the University Grants Commission (UGC) released stringent regulations under the title 'Regulations on Curbing Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009' on its official website.
The UGC, considering ragging as a criminal offense, emphasised the need for proactive measures to prevent, prohibit, and eliminate ragging from educational institutes.
The guidelines outlined by the Anti-Ragging Monitoring Committee, as directed by the Supreme Court of India, stressed the introduction of the mentor-mentee system.
This approach aims to foster a supportive relationship between junior and senior students, creating a more comfortable environment.
To strengthen anti-ragging efforts, institutions are urged to empower their Anti-Ragging Cells and Anti-Ragging Squads by providing legal counsel.
This move is intended to facilitate the preparation of robust cases against individuals involved in ragging incidents.
The UGC regulations included a strict provision regarding extreme ragging cases, emphasising that in instances leading to severe consequences like suicides, the principal of the college and the registrar of the university will be held accountable.

IIT Indore, CASE Construction Equipment Join to Set up Centre of Excellence

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CASE Construction Equipment. As part of the agreement, a CASE Centre of Excellence will be set up at the IIT Indore campus. The CASE Construction Equipment is a leading brand of CNH Industrial.
This collaboration is part of CASE's CSR initiatives and aims to foster increased collaboration between academics and the industry for the exchange of ideas, knowledge enhancement and research.
Under the MoU, IIT Indore will provide ready-to-install sufficient space with all the necessary infrastructure and required operators to run the facility to optimize the utilisation to support the testing and research activities. The testing and research will be carried out by IIT faculty and students.

Undergraduate Computer Applications and Management Courses to Come under AICTE

In a notification, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the inclusion of Management and Computer Programmes under the regulatory ambit of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The move extended AICTE's oversight from postgraduate to undergraduate courses in Computer Applications and Management from the next academic year.
With its current focus on engineering, technology, and postgraduate Management (MBA) and Computer Applications (MCA) courses, AICTE's authority will now extend to include undergraduate programmes.

IIT Madras and Deakin University, Australia, announced the launch of the IIT Madras Deakin University Research Academy.
Through collaborative global research projects, joint supervision and meritorious scholarships, this visionary academy will nurture several highly talented graduate research scholars, representing SAARC and ASEAN countries, ready to address and solve pressing global challenges.
The announcement was made during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and was welcomed by Sarah Kirlew, Australian Consul General, Chennai.

IIT-Hyderabad to Host Second Edition of MoE's R&D Innovation Fair IInvenTiv 2024

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) will host the second edition of Ministry of Education's flagship event R&D Innovation Fair IInvenTiv 2024. This event will be held on January 19 and 20, 2024.
IInvenTiv 2024 is a platform to highlight the holistic impact of the research and innovation carried out by the top higher education institutes in our country. It seeks collaborative avenues among state universities, institutes, and industry to enhance the development and reach of innovations at the grass roots level.
The second edition will focus on affordable healthcare, agriculture and food processing, sustainable technologies including climate change, e-mobility, clean energy, defence and space, and industry 4.0.

IIT-Madras, Sony India Launch Free Training Programme for Skill Development

IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation partnered with Sony India Software Centre Pvt Ltd to skill up engineering college students with industry-ready technical education.
As per IIT-M, training will be given in select disciplines such as AI/ML, Product Security, and Computer Graphics. The program is free of cost and students will be provided stipends based on fixed criteria. The students will be selected by the IIT-M Pravartak and Sony India for the Finishing School Training Program.

Bengaluru Women's College Turns Co-ed after 75 Years

In a historic shift, Mount Carmel College, a renowned women's institution in Bengaluru, broke tradition after 75 years. The institution decided to embrace co-education, opening its doors to male students for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs starting from the upcoming academic year.
The transition to a fully co-educational institution is expected to be gradual, with the administration having contemplated this change for several years.

Yogi Adityanath Launches PM SHRI Scheme

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the PM SHRI schools initiative at Lok Bhawan. This step is a big move to modernise 928 schools in Uttar Pradesh.
During the launch event, Adityanath emphasised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a global leader in education.
Out of the 1753 selected schools in Uttar Pradesh for the PM Schools for Rising India (SHRI) Yojana, the first phase will concentrate on upgrading 928 schools. These educational institutions will be transformed into integrated campuses, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to foster a conducive learning environment.
Prime Minister Modi had announced this scheme on Teacher's Day in 2022 to align with the National Education Policy 2020.
The PM SHRI initiative aims to revolutionise educational infrastructure by introducing modern facilities such as Smart Classrooms, Digital Libraries, Science Laboratories, Computer Labs, Bal Vatikas, additional classrooms and upgraded furniture in PM Shri Vidyalayas.
