Assam's 3rd Poverty Alleviation Scheme Launched for 372K Beneficiaries

  • The Assam government rolled out the third edition of its flagship poverty alleviation scheme 'Orunodoi', covering 37.2 lakh beneficiaries for direct cash transfer.
  • The 'Orunodoi 3.0' has upped the number of beneficiaries by over 12.5 lakh people across the state from 24.6 lakh recipients of the second edition of this scheme, and thus became the largest state-run DBT initiative in Assam ever.
  • The scheme, which is designed to empower women members of poor families, will deposit Rs. 1,250 per month directly to their bank accounts on the 10th day of every month.
  • The 'Orunodoi' scheme was first launched on December 1, 2020, and the second edition of it was announced on December 14, 2022, for adding more beneficiaries to the list.

Cabinet Approves PM-AASHA Scheme Extension with Rs. 35,000 crore Outlay

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay SanraksHan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA) to ensure fair prices for farmers and to regulate price fluctuations in essential commodities for consumers. This extension will incur a financial outlay of Rs. 35,000 crore during the 15th Finance Commission cycle, up to 2025-26.
  • The government has converged the Price Support Scheme (PSS) and Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) schemes under PM-AASHA to serve farmers and consumers more effectively. This integration aims to provide farmers with remunerative prices for their crops, while stabilising the market prices of essential commodities, thus making them affordable for consumers.

Cabinet Gives Nod to Bio-RIDE Scheme to Support R&D in Biotechnology

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Biotechnology Research Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (Bio-RIDE) scheme to boost biotechnology research, innovation, and entrepreneurship with an outlay of Rs. 9,197 crore for the 15th Finance Commission period (2021-22 to 2025-26).
  • The scheme merges two existing programs — Biotechnology Research and Development (R&D) and Industrial and Entrepreneurship Development (I&ED) — and introduces a new component called 'Bio-manufacturing and Bio-foundry.' This initiative aims to foster innovation, strengthen bio-entrepreneurship, and elevate India's global position in bio-manufacturing and biotechnology.
  • It will support research, product development, and the transition from academic research to industrial applications, aligning with national and global goals in healthcare, agriculture, sustainability, and clean energy.

PM Modi Launches Odisha's Flagship Scheme Subhadra

  • In 2024, honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi launched the scheme of "Subhadra", flagship initiative of the State Government of Odisha designed to benefit the one crore women in the state.
  • Subhadra Yojana is a financial assistance to women of Odisha, ensuring their economic independence and overall well-being.
  • The scheme is named after Goddess Subhadra, the younger sibling of Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Odisha.
  • The Subhadra Yojana is about the Odisha state government transferring Rs. 10,000 per year to eligible women beneficiaries in the state between the ages 21 and 60.

Blue Revolution: 4 Years of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

  • The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), launched in September 2020, is a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming India's fisheries sector and enhancing the welfare of fishermen. This scheme, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, addresses critical issues in fish production, productivity, quality, technology, and infrastructure while strengthening the fisheries value chain.
  • With an investment of Rs. 20,050 crore over five years (2020-21 to 2024-25), PMMSY targets inland fisheries and aquaculture, ensuring robust food security and supporting fisheries micro and small enterprises through its Central Sector Sub-scheme, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), which has a budget of over Rs. 6,000 crore.
  • On its 4th anniversary in September 2024, the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Rajeev Ranjan Singh, introduced several initiatives:
  • NFDP Portal and PM-MKSSY Guidelines: Launched the National Fisheries Development Program (NFDP) Portal and operational guidelines for PM-MKSSY, offering benefits like institutional credit and aquaculture insurance.
  • Fisheries Cluster Development: Announced SOPs for Production and Processing Clusters, focusing on Pearl cultivation, Ornamental fisheries, and Seaweed cultivation, and established three specialised clusters.
  • Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages: Introduced guidelines to develop 100 coastal villages into Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages with an allocation of Rs. 200 crore.
  • Drone Technology Pilot: Initiated a pilot project for using drone technology in fish transportation, conducted by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), and other initiatives.

Five Successful Years of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojana (PM-KMY)

  • Launched on September 12, 2019, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojna (PM-KMY) has provided social security to land-holding Small and Marginal Farmers (SMFs) across India. This voluntary and contributory old-age pension scheme offers a fixed monthly pension of Rs. 3,000 to eligible farmers after they turn sixty. Farmers contribute monthly to the pension fund, with matching contributions from the central government.
  • Under PM-KMY, small and marginal farmers can enroll by paying a monthly subscription to the pension fund. Those aged between 18 and 40 years contribute between Rs. 55 to Rs. 200 per month until age 60. Upon reaching 60, they receive a monthly pension of Rs. 3,000, subject to exclusion criteria. The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) manages the fund, and registration is facilitated through Common Service Centres (CSCs) and State Governments. As of August 6, 2024, 23.38 lakh farmers have joined the scheme, with Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha showing significant uptake.
