Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act

The Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act are two landmark legislations from the European Union. The draft legislation gives specific regulations to limit the powers of global internet companies like Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon in the European market. Under the legislation, the larger firms are designated as digital gatekeepers and would be subject to stricter regulations. Violation of competition rules could invite as much as 10% of the firm's annual turnover.
Digital Services Act aims to create uniform framework throughout the European Union in handling potentially harmful content online, protection of users' fundamental rights online, liability of online intermediaries for third party content and bridging the information asymmetries between online intermediaries and their users.
The Digital Markets Act addresses the digital market imbalances in the European Union.
Digital market act is applicable only to provider of core platform services. This includes social networking services, search engines, operating systems and online intermediation services.

Gujarat Enforces Anti-land Grab Law

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced that a stringent anti-land grabbing law with a provision of a minimum of 10 years imprisonment, which can go up to 14 years, for violators has come into force across the state.
The Gujarat Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act, passed in the last session of the state Assembly, has been framed to ensure time-bound and speedy disposal of complaints and protect the interests of farmers and common man.
Under the provisions of the Act, anyone who illegally grabs land, provides money for construction, threatens the owner, extorts rent, or helps in any such activity will fall under the definition of land grabber. A commercial company, a group of people or a religious or charity organisation can also be held as accused.

Government All Set to Launch 'Brand India' Mission

The government is all set to launch a 'Brand India' mission, focused on the promotion of quality products that are manufactured in the country.
The move, being piloted by the Piyush Goyal-led commerce and industry ministry, is based on similar policies in other countries, including the US, Switzerland, Germany and France, which regulate claims made to goods produced in their jurisdiction.

Maharashtra Government to Launch 'MahaSharad' Platform

Maharashtra's Department of Social Justice is all set to launch an ambitious scheme for distribution of assistive devices to peopple with disabilities through MahaSharad Digital Platform to coincide with NCP chief Sharad Pawar's 80th birthday. It will be available on Play Store by March 2021.
Maharashtra System for Health and Rehabilitation Assistance" or MahaSharad platform has been created to provide various devices to persons with disabilities free of cost through the Commissionerate for persons with Disability. Modern equipment and devices help divyang to lead life like normal individuals.

Parliament Nod Awaited for Valuers Bill

According to Institution of Value (IOV), the profession of valuers would be standardised once the draft Valuers Bill is enacted by the Parliament.
The Bill is in circulation to get suggestions and opinions from the stakeholders and general public after which it would be placed before both Houses of Parliament.
On the basis of a committee's recommendation formed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Bill is exploring to establish a National Institute of Valuers (NIV).
The NIV would serve the purpose of developing the profession of valuers and regulating the market of valuation service, he said at the sidelines of the two-day 51st Indian Valuers Conference 2020.

Ministry Issues Indian Ports Bill, 2020 Draft Set to Replace Indian Ports Act, 1908

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways circulated the draft of Indian Ports Bill 2020 for public consultation which will repeal and replace the Indian Ports Act, 1908.
The draft Indian Ports Bill, 2020, seeks to, inter alia, enable the structured growth and sustainable development of ports to attract investments in the port sector for optimum utilisation of the Indian coastline by effective administration and management of ports.
The proposed Bill will provide measures to facilitate conservation of ports, taking into account the prevalent situation with respect to the high number of non-operational ports. It shall further ensure greater investment in the Indian maritime and ports sector through the creation of improved, comprehensive regulatory frameworks for the creation of new ports and management of existing ports.
