National Mountain Climbing Day

  • National Mountain Climbing Day, observed annually on August 1, is a day dedicated to honouring the spirit of adventure and the remarkable achievements of mountaineers. World Breastfeeding Week

  • World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action on themes related to breastfeeding. It is celebrated from August 1 to 7 August every year.
  • WBW started in 1992, with annual themes including healthcare systems, women and work, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, community support, ecology, economy, science, education, and human rights.
  • Since 2016, WBW is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.
  • The 2024 World Breastfeeding Week, under the theme 'Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all', UNICEF and WHO are emphasising the need to improve breastfeeding support as a critical action for reducing health inequity and protecting the rights of mothers and babies to survive and thrive.

World Lung Cancer Day

  • World Lung Cancer Day is observed annually on August 1.
  • The observance of World Lung Cancer Day began in 2012 when the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) jointly decided to dedicate August 1 to raising awareness about lung cancer. Since its inception, this day has played a crucial role in educating the public about the disease and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
  • The theme for World Lung Cancer Day 2024 is 'Close the care gap: Everyone deserves access to cancer care'. This powerful message emphasises the importance of equitable access to lung cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location.
