Celebration of National Panchayati Raj Day

  • The Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Madhya Pradesh commemorated National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) on 24th April, 2023 at Rewa in Madhya Pradesh as a major event as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) – Samaaveshi Vikaas (Inclusive Development) adopting Whole-of-the-Government approach. The Prime Minister was the Chief Guest at the national function organised at Special Armed Forces Ground, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. He will address the elected representatives and functionaries of Panchayati Raj Institutions as well as Special Gram Sabhas across the country on this momentous occasion.
  • The Prime Minister inaugurated an integrated e-GramSwaraj and GeM portal for public procurement at Panchayat level. The objective of eGramSwaraj–GeM Integration is to enable the Panchayats to procure their goods and services through GeM leveraging the eGramSwaraj platform. The launch of eGramSwaraj – GeM Integration at the hands of the Prime Minister will encourage Panchayats to usher in the digital revolution where they would have the access to an easy-to-use procurement and payment platform. Launch by PM Modi will encourage both the Panchayats and local sellers to adopt this initiative which in turn will help the entire buyer-seller ecosystem to flourish thereby giving a major boost to rural economy and entrepreneurship along with strengthening the Digital India Program.

English Language Day

  • English Language Day is observed annually on April 23, the aim is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity by exploring the language. English Language Day marks both the birthday and date of the death of famed writer William Shakespeare. English is one of the most popular languages used across the world. The day prospects the development, history, culture, and achievements associated with the language.
  • This day makes up one of six UN language days. In the year 2010, an initiative by the Department of Public Information established language days for each of the organization's six official languages from across the world.
  • The days are Arabic (December 18), Chinese (April 20), English (April 23), French (March 20), Russian (June 6) and Spanish (April 23).

World Book and Copyright Day

  • World Book and Copyright Day also known as World Book Day is celebrated every year on April 23 to highlight the importance of reading books. According to UNESCO, "storytelling is an incredibly effective tool when it comes to educating younger generations." The day is also dedicated to paying respect to renowned authors, including William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, who died on this day. In 2022, the World Book Capital is the Mexican city of Guadalajara.
  • UNESCO selected April 23 as World Book Day to pay tribute to great literary figures including William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega who died on this day. In 1995, this date was finalised by the UNESCO General Conference, held in Paris, to pay tribute and honour authors and books worldwide.

Earth Day

  • Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation.
  • The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.
  • The theme for Earth Day 2023 was "Invest in Our Planet."

National Civil Services Day

  • National Civil Services Day is observed on April 21 each year, to highlight the importance of civil services and commemorate the work done by officers in civil service toward nation-building.
  • Though, National Civil Services Day was first observed on April 21, 2006. The reason for celebrating this particular day as National Civil Services Day goes far back in history. Our first Home Minister, also known as the Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel believed in civil services as an essential component of nation-building. It was in 1947 while addressing the Probationary Officers at the All India Administrative Service Training School at Metcalfe House, Delhi, he first referred to the civil servants/ services as the " Steel Frame Of India". This accurately emphasizes the role civil servants have played and are expected to play for the growth and well-being of the Nation.

World Liver Day

  • World Liver Day is celebrated across the world on April 19. The day focuses on raising awareness about liver-related disorders and diseases as the highly complex organ of the body is responsible for immunity, digestion, as well as metabolism, making it important to keep the liver healthy. In India, liver ailments amount to the 10th most common reason for death, World Health Organisation (WHO) said.
  • The theme for World Liver Day 2023 was 'Be Vigilant, Do Regular Liver Check-Up, Fatty Liver Can Affect Anyone.'
