Mamata Banerjee Names Sourav Ganguly as the 'Brand Ambassador of Bengal'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared former cricketer and ex-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, as the Brand Ambassador of Bengal.
Expressing her rationale for choosing Sourav Ganguly as the Brand Ambassador, Banerjee said that Sourav Ganguly is a very popular figure, and he can work for the young generation in a very good manner.
This move not only adds a prominent personality to the state's promotional efforts but also leverages Ganguly's influence to connect with the younger demographic.

Founder of Sankara Netralaya Dr.S. S Badrinath Passes Away

Renowned vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. S. S. Badrinath, who was the founder of Sankara Nethralaya and dedicated his life to improving the accessibility and affordability of eye care in India, passed away.
In 1978, Dr S S Badrinath founded the Medical Research Foundation, which encompasses Sankara Nethralaya as its hospital unit. It is a registered society and a charitable non-profit ophthalmic organisation.
Dr. Badrinath's contributions to the field of medicine were widely recognized. He received the Padma Sri award in 1983, the Padma Bhushan in 1999, and the Bidhan Chandra Roy Award in 1991.

Rosalynn Carter, US First Lady Known as 'Steel Magnolia', Dies

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Jimmy Carter during his one term as U.S. President and their four decades thereafter as global humanitarians, died at the age of 96.
She was nicknamed the 'Steel Magnolia' by the press, a reference she did not mind, saying that 'steel is tough and magnolia is southern', Rosalynn was naturally shy and her knees would knock together when she had to give a speech in the early days of her husband's political career in the 1960s.

Dhoom Director Sanjay Gadhvi Passed Away

The film industry lost a creative force with the sudden demise of renowned filmmaker Sanjay Gadhvi. Best known for directing the blockbuster films 'Dhoom' (2004) and its sequel 'Dhoom 2' (2006), Gadhvi's contribution to Indian cinema has left an indelible mark.
Gadhvi's directorial journey began in 2000 with 'Tere Liye', but it was his third venture, 'Dhoom', that catapulted him to fame. The film's success led to the highly acclaimed 2006 sequel, 'Dhoom 2', featuring a star-studded cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Bipasha Basu.

Former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan Passes Away

S. Venkitaramanan, the 18th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, passed away in Chennai at the age of 92. He held the position from December 1990 to December 1992. Before his tenure as RBI Governor, Venkitaramanan served as the finance secretary in the Ministry of Finance from 1985 to 1989 and was also advisor to the government of Karnataka.

Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palcios Crowned Miss Universe 2023

Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palacios was crowned Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd edition of the pageant, held this year in El Salvador.
Palacios received the crown and sash from her predecessor, R'Bonney Gabriel from the United States.
This is the first time a contestant from Nicaragua has won the contest, with Thailand's Anntonia Porsild and Australia's Moraya Wilson rounding out the top three.

World-renowned Art Historian B. N. Goswamy Dies

Eminent art historian and art critic B. N. Goswamy, who ruled the hearts of art lovers like few before him, passed away. He was 90.
Born on August 15, 1933, the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee was best-known for his works on the Pahari style of paintings.
Fondly known as BNG in art circles, Mr. Goswamy authored more than 26 books on the subjects of Pahari paintings, miniature paintings, court painters, and masters of Indian paintings among others.

Booker Prize Winning Author Dame Antonia Byatt Passes Away

Acclaimed British author AS Byatt, who won the 1990 Booker Prize for her best-selling romance novel "Possession", died at the age of 87.
The novelist, who was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2009 for "The Children's Book", was made a dame in 1999.
Other accolades during her career, which produced 24 novels and works of criticism, included winning the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction.
Her books have been translated into dozens of languages.
She was awarded the Erasmus Prize in 2016, for her "inspiring contribution to life writing", and the Pak Kyongni Prize in 2017.
In 2018 she received the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.
