Kenneth Kaunda: Zambia's First President Dies

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's first President and one of the last of the generation of African leaders who fought colonialism, died aged 97.
Kaunda was admitted to a military hospital in the capital, Lusaka, suffering from pneumonia.
In the 1950s, Kaunda was a key figure in what was then Northern Rhodesia's independence movement from Britain.
He became President following independence in 1964.
As head of the left-leaning United National Independence Party (UNIP), Kaunda then led the country through decades of one-party rule.
He stepped down after losing multi-party elections in 1991.

Montek Ahluwalia Named Member of World Bank-IMF High-Level Advisory Group

Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and distinguished fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP), was named as a member of a High-Level Advisory Group (HLAG) formed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the face of the dual crisis posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.
The World Bank Group and IMF announced that the aim of the HLAG on sustainable and inclusive recovery and growth is to "help secure a strong recovery and set a path for green, resilient, and inclusive development over the coming decade".
The group will be jointly led by Mari Pangestu, Managing Director for Development Policy and Partnerships, World Bank; Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, Director, Strategy, Policy and Review Department, International Monetary Fund; and Lord Nicholas Stern of the London School of Economics.

MyGlamm Names Shraddha Kapoor as Brand Ambassador

D2C beauty and personal care brand, MyGlamm, has announced Shraddha Kapoor as its brand ambassador. With this, Kapoor is also investing in the company.
Founded in 2017 by Darpan Sanghvi and co-founded by Priyanka Gill, MyGlamm offers a range of over 600 cruelty-free products across makeup, skincare and personal care. MyGlamm embraces the philosophy of building a community with its users, engaging with them and eventually co-creating products with them. Jewellery Chain Ropes in Dutee Chand as Ambassador

Jewellery retail chain Senco Gold & Diamonds has signed the current national champion in the women's 100 metre event, Dutee Chand, as its new brand ambassador.
The national champion will promote Senco Gold & Diamonds' new light-weight jewellery range 'Everlite'. The 85-year-old brand, one of India's largest jewellery retail chains, is celebrating Pride Month.
The brand has unveiled a new range of Everlite jewellery named the 'Love is Love Collection' that offers a range of rings, ear-studs, chains and pendants in gold and diamond for daily wear as well as for occasions. Headquartered in Kolkata, Senco Gold & Diamonds has more than 100 stores across India and is the largest jewellery retail chain from Eastern India.

Biotechnology Company MyLab Appoints Akshay Kumar as Brand Ambassador

Bollywood superstar, Akshay Kumar has been appointed as the new brand ambassador of biotechnology company Mylab Discovery Solutions. This announcement comes days after the Pune-based firm launched the country's first COVID-19 self-test kit "CoviSelf".
The partnership with Akshay is aimed at creating awareness for Mylab's products and kits such as CoviSelf.

Milkha's Wife Nirmal Kaur Passes Away at 85

Even as legendary Milkha Singh battles for life in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, his wife Nirmal Kaur, 85, lost battle to Covid-19 almost three weeks after contracting the virus. Nirmal breathed her last at Fortis hospital in Mohali.
Former captain of the Indian women's volleyball team, Nirmal's health deteriorated a few days after she was admitted to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh condoled the death of Nirmal Milkha Singh.

Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly Indira Hridayesh Passes Away

Leader of Opposition in the Uttarakhand Assembly Indira Hridayesh passed away in New Delhi on June 13, the Congress party said.
She was 80. Hridayesh had attended a meeting chaired by party in-charge for Uttarakhand, Devendra Yadav, in New Delhi on June 12.

Environmentalist and Organic Farming Proponent Radha Mohan Dies

Noted environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee Professor Radha Mohan, who helped popularise organic farming techniques, died in Bhubaneswar. He was 78.
A former Odisha Information Commissioner and a retired professor of economics, he and one of his daughters were credited with transforming a piece of wasteland into a vast forest, home to rare produce, using organic techniques.
He was awarded the Padma Shri along with his daughter Sabarmatee in 2020 for their contribution to the agriculture sector. Back in 1990, the father-daughter duo founded 'Sambhav', a social organisation aimed at educating farmers on organic and natural farming.
They transformed the 36 hectares of wasteland in Nayagarh district's Odagaon using ecological waste to create fertile topsoil. That land now boasts of more than 1,000 plant species including rare ones such as clove bean and black rice. It also supports a bank of 700 indigenous seed varieties.

Sunita Narain Appointed to Climate Action Group

Noted environmentalist Sunita Narain has been appointed to an international advisory group for climate action by Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation Per Olsson Fridh. The international group consists of experts who provide a "deep commitment and knowledge in the field.
The group aims to "further strengthen" Swedish government's attempts to address climate change and conserve biodiversity. "Strong global action on these issues is necessary for sustainable and equitable development, and to prevent conflicts and new pandemics.

Padma Shri Recipient Dr. Ashok Panagariya Dies

Prominent neurologist and Padma Shri recipient Dr Ashok Panagariya died of post-Covid complications. He was 71.
Dr. Ashok Panagariya made a mark as an outstanding neurologist. His pioneering work in the medical field will benefit generations of doctors and researchers. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends.
