India, Oman Joint Naval Exercise 'Naseem Al Bahr' off Goa' Coast Concludes

  • Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman concluded their bilateral naval exercise, 'Naseem Al Bahr' off the coast of Goa.
  • As per reports, the exercise was conducted in two phases, with the harbour phase that lasted from October 13 to October 15, which was followed by the sea phase which was conducted from October 16 to October 18.
  • As part of harbour activities, personnel from both Navies engaged in professional interactions, including Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and planning conferences. In addition to this, sports fixtures and social engagements were also held.
  • During the sea phase of the exercise, ships carried out various evolutions, including gun firings at surface inflatable targets, close-range anti-aircraft firings, manoeuvres, and Replenishment at Sea Approaches (RASAPS).

Switzerland Joins European Air Defence Initiative Sky Shield

  • Switzerland joined a German-led effort aimed at bolstering Europe's defence against air strikes, as the traditionally neutral country continues to recalibrate its policy after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
  • Armament Chief Urs Loher signed a declaration to join the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). The project involves countries jointly procuring air- and missile-defence systems and is designed to increase cost efficiency and flexibility.
  • Germany launched ESSI in 2022 with the aim of making the continent less vulnerable to air strikes at a time of increasing geopolitical tension. Some 21 nations, including the UK and Turkey, have signed up.

Army's Sudarshan Chakra Corps Conduct 'Swavlamban Shakti' Exercise

  • With the aim of enhancing combat capabilities through the integration of niche and emerging technologies, the Army's Sudarshan Chakra Corps of Southern Command is conducting 'Exercise Swavlamban Shakti' at Babina Field Firing Ranges near Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The exercise will conclude on October 22. The XXI Corps or Sudarshan Chakra Corps, a strike corps of the army, is headquartered in Bhopal. The exercise that aims to integrate New Technology Equipment (NTEs) into the Army's offensive strategies, ensuring readiness for future warfare scenarios, started in the presence of Lt Gen Prit Pal Singh, General Officer Commanding of Sudarshan Chakra Corps.

  • International defence and security community met in Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic within the Future Forces Exhibhition 2024. This year's edition took place from October 16 to 18 at the PVA EXPO PRAGUE exhibition centre.
  • The programme was attended by the President of the Czech Republic, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces and foreign delegations from more than 60 countries, represented by Ministers of Defence, Deputy Ministers, Chiefs of the General Staff, Force Commanders, Ambassadors and Defence Attachés.
  • Munitions India Limited made a strong impression at the Future Forces Exhibition 2024. The Indian pavilion insugurated by Raveesh Kumar, India's ambassador to the Czech Republic showcased MIL's cutting-edge defence technology and solutions.

Saluting Valour A Month-Long Tribute to 1962 Walong Heroes

  • The Indian Army embarked on a month-long series of commemorative events from October 17 to November 14, 2024, to honour the brave soldiers who fought valiantly in the Battle of Walong during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. This year marks the 62nd Walong Day, celebrating the courage and sacrifice of those who defended India's eastern front.
  • The events aim to engage local communities and reinforce the bond between the Army and the people of Arunachal Pradesh.

The 40th Raising Day of National Security Guard

  • On October 16, 2024, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, commemorated the 40th Raising Day of the National Security Guard (NSG), praising the bravery and dedication of its personnel.
  • Prime Minister of India and Union Home Minister Amit Shah also acknowledged the dedication of NSG personnel. They highlighted the unit's motto, "Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha," emphasising NSG's expertise in counter-terrorism and swift response operations.
  • The NSG was established on October 16, 1984, in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, aimed at eliminating Sikh extremists from the Golden Temple of Amritsar. The operation underscored the need for a dedicated force to handle terrorism. Following a bill presented to Parliament in August 1986, the NSG officially came into existence on September 22, 1986. Today, it remains a vital force in India's security landscape, committed to safeguarding the nation from various threats.

Rajnath Singh Lays Foundation Stone for Naval Communication Station in Telangana

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a new Very Low Frequency (VLF) Station of the Indian Navy. The station, located at the Damagundam Reserve Forest in Vikarabad, Telangana, will cover 2,900 acres and is expected to cost Rs. 3,200 crore.
  • The new facility is designed to enhance the Indian Navy's communication capabilities, allowing for reliable and secure transmission over long distances. The Defence Minister highlighted its importance, noting that it will serve as a strategic asset, crucial for effective command and control in challenging maritime environments.
