IIT Kanpur & NSI Kanpur Sign MoU to Establish a Centre of excellence for Biofuels

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and National Sugar Institute, Kanpur (NSI Kanpur) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels at NSI Kanpur. The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Dept of Food & Public Distribution, Govt of India; Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur; and Seema Paroha, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
  • Under this MoU, IIT Kanpur & NSI Kanpur will engage in joint projects to conduct cutting-edge research and develop and adopt state-of-the-art technology to enhance biofuel production in the country with improved efficiency and sustainability. Biofuels are expected to play a key role in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change as well. The focus area of this collaborative research work will be the study on enhancing the production of Ethanol, Methanol, Bio-CNG, Aviation Fuel, and Green Hydrogen, etc. from biomass, a renewable source of energy.

Goa Introducing Uniforms in Govt Colleges

  • The Goa government decided to introduce uniforms for students in government colleges and government-aided colleges in the state from the academic year 2024-25, saying the move will 'foster a sense of belonging" and "bridge gaps in socio-economic disparities'.
  • The Directorate of Higher Education said that the specifications of uniforms shall be decided by the respective colleges, adding that the expenditure towards uniforms of the students is not covered under the pattern of assistance.

New UGC Framework Transforms PG Studies with Flexible Multidisciplinary Options

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India unveiled a revolutionary Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes, designed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • This new framework stands out for its focus on multidisciplinary and holistic education, offering students flexible entry and exit options. UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar urged all higher education institutions to swiftly adopt this framework, which promises to empower students by letting them choose their courses and switch disciplines, in sync with the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF) and National Credit Framework (NCrF). The framework also accommodates the creditisation of work experience and allows students to pursue multiple degrees simultaneously or through online platforms.
  • One of the major highlights of the new postgraduate curriculum framework is its increased flexibility and mobility for students.

Oracle Partners with Tamil Nadu to Empower Youth with IT Skills

  • Oracle has teamed up with the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation to enhance IT skills among the state's youth through the Naan Mudhalvan program. This initiative aims to provide training and certification in cutting-edge technologies like cloud computing, data science, AI, ML, and blockchain, offering employment-linked opportunities to over 200,000 students.
  • The Naan Mudhalvan program by Oracle in collaboration with Tamil Nadu aims to equip over 200,000 students with skills in cloud computing, data science, AI, ML, and blockchain. The training will be delivered by teachers and academicians directly on campuses, supplemented by digital modules available on Oracle MyLearn.

WHO Recognises 3rd Indian Institute for Traditional Medicine Research

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) designated National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH) in Hyderabad, under the Ministry of Ayush, as a WHO Collaborating Centre (CC) for traditional medicine research.
  • NIIMH, Hyderabad is a unit under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) which will now work as a WHO centre for 'Fundamental and Literary Research in Traditional Medicine'.
  • This recognition has been granted for a period of four years.
  • CCRAS-NIIMH, Hyderabad, joined the ranks as the third WHO Collaborating Centre in the domain of traditional medicine, followed by the Institute for Teaching & Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar, and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi.

IGNOU Launches New Programme in MBA Agribusiness Management (MBAABM)

  • The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) School of Agriculture launched a Master of Business Administration (Agribusiness Management) that aims to prepare competent business professionals to boost the agricultural business and farmer's economy.
  • This new programme intends to develop business professionals for managing farm businesses and agro-based industries profitably. The programme is of two-year duration and it can be completed in the maximum duration of four years. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in any discipline are eligible to enroll in the MBA Agribusiness Management programme.

Shobha Das New Dean of Ahmedabad University's Amrut Mody School of Management

  • Professor Shobha Das was appointed as the new Dean of the Amrut Mody School of Management at Ahmedabad University.
  • Professor Das, who joined from the IFMR Graduate School of Business, Krea University, has served there as Dean and as Professor, PhD Committee Chair and Strategy Area Chair. She has a three-decade long experience that includes Nanyang Business School at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Qatar University.

Gujarat Issues New Rules for Class 11 Students Seeking Admission in Science Streams

  • The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) issued rules for Class 11 students opting for Science streams – group A (non medical) and group AB (both biology and maths).
  • As per the rules issued by GSHSEB, the students should have cleared basic maths subject in their Class 10 board examination with not less than 33 per cent marks, excluding any grace marks, for admission to Class 11.
  • Further, the board has directed schools to conduct a separate test of 30 marks based on standard maths subject to assess the ability and aptitude of students. The test will have 15 multiple-choice questions and 15 subjective questions and students will have to score 33 per cent marks to be eligible for admission in Class 11 A or AB groups.

UGC Announces New Fee Refund Policy for Higher Education Institutions

  • Amid ongoing grievances from students and parents over Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) failing to refund fees upon admission cancellations or withdrawals, the University Grants Commission (UGC) unveiled a robust fee refund policy for the academic session 2024-25.
  • During its 580th meeting, the UGC decided that HEIs must provide a full refund of fees for all cancellations or migrations of students up to September 30. A nominal processing fee of no more than Rs 1,000 will be deducted for refunds processed up to October 31, 2024.
  • This policy applies to all HEIs established or incorporated under Central or State Acts, as well as those recognised by the UGC under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
  • It also includes institutions deemed to be universities under Section 3 of the same Act, and all HEIs affiliated with a university.

IIT Kharagpur Appoints Rintu Banerjee as Institute's First Woman Deputy Director

  • Rintu Banerjee was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Banerjee, as per a statement, is the first woman to take over the charge of this position. With a career spanning various important portfolios, she has made significant contributions in the field of biotechnology.
  • Banerjee is the founder head and is presently the chairperson of P. K. Sinha Centre for Bioenergy and Renewables. She has also served as the Head of the Centre for Rural Development, Innovative and Sustainable Technology and Head of the Department of Agricultural & Food Engineering at IIT Kharagpur for three years.

AICTE Launches Post-doctoral Fellowship (PDF) Scheme to Benefit 200 Scholars Annually

  • In a significant move to enhance research culture, innovation, and technical education, the Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Prof. T.G. Sitharam, officially launched the AICTE Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) Scheme for 2024.
  • Prof. Sitharam highlighted the scheme's goal of fostering a robust research culture and advancing knowledge within AICTE-approved institutions.
  • The scheme will award 200 fellowships annually. The fellowship tenure is initially one year with extension of one more year. The scheme covers all areas under the purview of AICTE including Engineering and Technology, Management, Design, Planning, Applied Arts, Crafts and Design, Applied Sciences, Computer Application, Hotel Management and Catering Technology, and Interdisciplinary Areas.
