Chaukhandi Stupa to be of National Importance

An ancient Buddhist site in Uttar Pradesh's Sarnath known as Chaukhandi Stupa has been declared to be of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The government had sought public feedback in March for a period of two months.

Temple Festival 'Thrissur Pooram'

A parade of around 50 elephants has been the centrepiece of Kerala's popular temple festival, Thrissur Pooram, since the late 18th century when the erstwhile Kochi royal family started it.
The week-long festival at Thrissur's Vadakkumnathan Temple would not be the same when it starts this year without the parade.
The elephant owners have announced a boycott of the festival in protest against the ban on a 54-year-old tusker, Thechikottukavu Ramachandran, from participating in Thrissur Pooram.
The elephant, which suffers from a partial loss of vision, has been the centre of attraction at the festival since the 1970s.
It was barred from participating in the festival after trampling two people to death in February. The elephant has been symbolically pushing open the Vadakkumnathan Temple's southern entrance to mark the beginning of Thrissur Pooram for four decades.

Yakshagana Melas to End This Month

Yakshagana melas (touring troupes) in the coastal belt will wind up their 'tirugata' (tour) of the 2018-19 season this month, starting from May 11, with 15-year-old Edneer mela deciding to close down after this season's performances. The belt has more than 40 melas. Unlike in the 2017-18 season, Yakshagana performances during the current season were peaceful without interference from Election Commission officials while enforcing the poll code for the Lok Sabha elections.

Beijing Film Fest

One of China's top film festivals has clubbed five Indian films, including Satyajit Ray's 1955 landmark, Pather Panchali, under the category of movies from countries that are seemingly aligned with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The high-profile Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF) that is scheduled to be held between April 13 and April 20 is organised by the Beijing municipality government.
The five Indian movies included in the "Belt and Road" category are the three Ray movies comprising the famous Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar), the romantic comedy Love per Square Foot, the thriller Ittefaq, and the Mumbai-based movie, Sir, which explores the ties between a domestic help and her young and wealthy employer.
Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's Zero is the designated closing movie at the festival.
