Telugu Language Day

Telugu Language Day, celebrated annually on August 29, honours the rich heritage and cultural significance of the Telugu language, one of the classical languages of India. The day is also a tribute to the life and work of one of the most revered figures in Telugu literature, Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy. A pioneer of the language reform movement, Ramamurthy's contributions have left an indelible mark on the Telugu literary world.
The Telugu Language Day is celebrated every year on August 29 coinciding with the birth anniversaries of the Telugu poet Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy. The Andhra Pradesh government declared August 29 as Telugu Language Day in 1966.

National Sports Day

India celebrates National Sports Day every year on August 29, which is a special occasion dedicated to marking the spirit of sports in India. Apart from India's achievements in sports, this day emphasises the importance of sports to keep us healthy and active.
The Indian government officially announced to celebrate National Sports Day in 2012 marking August 29 as a day to recognise sports excellence. The date was selected to pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, also known as the 'Wizard of Hockey'. Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. His career spanned from 1926 to 1948, when he played 185 matches for India scoring over 400 goals. His excellent performance brought the golden period for Indian hockey as he led India to win three gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

International Day Against Nuclear Tests

Every year on August 29, the world observes the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. This significant day serves as a global reminder of the devastating effects of nuclear weapons testing and the urgent need for a world free from the threat of nuclear destruction. Since the dawn of the nuclear age in 1945, over 2,000 nuclear tests have been conducted, leaving a legacy of environmental damage and human suffering.
On December 2, 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 64/35, declaring August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. This resolution was a significant step towards raising global awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions.

International Dog Day

International Dog Day is celebrated on August 26 every year. International Dog Day is first established in 2004. This day is celebrated all over the world to encourage people to adopt more dogs instead of buying them from pet shops.
International Dog Day was first celebrated in 2004 by animal welfare activist and pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige. Ms. Paige chose the date of August 26 in particular as it was on this date that the activist's family adopted their first dog Sheltie from the local animal shelter. Ms. Colleen was 10 when the family welcomed Sheltie into their fold.

Mother Teresa is known for her unwavering efforts to improve society and for having served as an inspiration to many individuals worldwide. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910, Mother Teresa had a strong Catholic upbringing from an early age. Mother Teresa felt the call of God and chose to become a missionary when she was just 12 years old. In 1928, she moved out of her parents' house and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish order of nuns with missions in India.
Only a few days after turning 87, on September 5, 1997, Mother Teresa died due to cardiac arrest in Kolkata.
Mother Teresa received multiple honours and recognition on a global scale for her unwavering efforts. Among the most noteworthy was the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize she was awarded for her humanitarian endeavours.

National Space Day

India celebrates National Space Day on August 23.
National Space Day 2024 recognises the critical role that space exploration has played in India's scientific and technical progress. This date was selected to correspond with the success of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission, which made India the fourth nation in history to arrive on the moon on August 23, 2023. In addition to demonstrating ISRO's developing capabilities, this accomplishment inspired national pride and gained international attention for the country's space program.
India celebrated its maiden National Space Day on August 23, 2024 with the theme 'Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India's Space Saga'.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is an international day celebrated on August 23 of each year. The day was chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to memorialise the transatlantic slave trade.
On the night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Saint Domingue, today the Republic of Haiti, saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
It is against this background that the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is commemorated on August 23 each year. It was first celebrated in a number of countries, in particular in Haiti (August 23, 1998) and Gorée Island in Senegal (August 23, 1999).
