International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

  • International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed annually on October 13. The day is observed to promote a culture of disaster reduction and risk awareness globally.
  • In 1989, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was established after a call by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to promote a culture of disaster reduction around the world.
  • The theme for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2021 was "International co-operation for developing countries to reduce their disaster risk and disaster losses". The theme was chosen as 2021 is a make-or-break year for delivering on the 2015 Paris Agreement to counter climate change.

World Arthritis Day

  • World Arthritis Day (WAD) is celebrated every year on October 12 to spread awareness about the existence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. Arthritis is not a single disease but a broad term for more than a hundred diseases related to joints.
  • World Arthritis Day was first observed in 1996 and the theme for World Arthritis Day 2021 was 'Don't Delay, Connect Today: Time2Work'. The day provides an opportunity for all communities, everywhere, to come together and to find a common voice to help bring the much-needed message to all audiences.

World Mental Health Day

  • World Mental Health Day celebrated on October 10 is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
  • World Mental Health Day was celebrated for the first time on October 10, 1992, at the initiative of Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter.
  • The theme for World Mental Health Day 2021 was 'Mental Health in an Unequal World'.

World Post Day

  • World Post Day is celebrated every year on October 9, to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) across the world. UPA was established in the year 1874 in Switzerland. Postal systems have been in operation for many centuries.
  • World Post Day was first celebrated in 1969 at the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan. It was submitted by an Indian delegation named, Shri Anand Mohan Narula and since then, World Post Day has been celebrated all over the world in order to spotlight the importance of postal services.
  • Every year, the UPU's 192 member countries celebrate World Post Day to mark the importance of universal mail and the UPU's contributions to society and the global economy. Countries hold special stamp exhibitions and launch new postal initiatives. India hosts a week-long celebration each year over the week of October 9.
  • The theme for World Postal Day 2021 was 'Innovate to recover'.

Indian Air Force Day

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked its raising day, which is observed annually on October 8 as IAF Day. The year 2021 marked 89 years since the IAF's foundation, and, as always, celebrations took place at the Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad in the presence of the Chief of Air Staff and senior officials of the three armed forces.
  • The IAF was established on October 8, 1932, as a supporting force of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force. Initially known as the Royal Indian Air Force, the prefix Royal was dropped in 1950 when India transitioned into a Republic. The IAF is the air wing of the Indian Armed Forces and the fourth largest air force in the world. It is headed by an Air Chief Marshal (ACM), while the President of India is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
