International Yoga Day

Every year, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21. The day is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of people through yoga. It is an occasion to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of yoga.
The United Nations established the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, to raise awareness about the many benefits of yoga and to promote its as a way for a healthy lifestyle.
The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly.
The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 'Yoga for Self and Society', emphasises yoga's role in fostering individual well-being and societal harmony.

World Music Day

Also known as 'Fête de la Musique', World Music Day is celebrated annually on June 21 to promote the universal language of music.
The concept of World Music Day originated in France in 1981, when Jack Lang, the French Ministry of Culture, along with music composer Maurice Fleuret, and a radio producer and music journalist, proposed the idea of dedicating a day to music. The first World Music Day or Fête de la Musique took place in Paris in 1982, with over 1,000 musicians performing throughout the city.

World Hydrography Day

Every year on June 21, World Hydrography Day is celebrated globally, a special occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the significance of hydrography and the invaluable contributions made by hydrographers worldwide.
The establishment of World Hydrography Day can be traced back to 2005 when the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) recognized the need for a dedicated day to highlight the importance of hydrography and the work of hydrographers. The date of June 21 holds significance as it marks the founding anniversary of the IHO in 1921. By celebrating World Hydrography Day on this date, the IHO aimed to commemorate its establishment while also promoting international cooperation in hydrography.
The theme for World Hydrography Day 2024 is 'Hydrographic Information - Enhancing Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability in Marine Activities'.

World Refugee Day

Every year, June 20 is celebrated as World Refugee Day. The day is dedicated to raise awareness about the plight of refugees worldwide and to promote their inclusion and acceptance in host communities.
The first ever World Refugee Day was celebrated on June 20, 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. The day was earlier recognized as Africa Refugee Day and later in December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared it as an International Day for Refugees. World Refugee Day is an important day to reflect on the plight of refugees worldwide and to renew the commitment to finding lasting solutions to this pressing issue.
The theme of World Refugee Day 2024 is 'For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed.'

World Sauntering Day

World Sauntering Day is observed all over the world on June 19 every year.
In 1979, W. T. Rabe established World Sauntering Day. He was the one who started this holiday in the 1970s. This day was created in response to jogging's growing popularity. W.T. Rabe, it appears, has also devised a few sauntering norms. This act must be performed in comfortable clothing, and "some people are just born with it," according to W.T. Rabe. The purpose of commemorating this day is to encourage people to take a break, enjoy life, and appreciate what they have.

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

World Sickle Cell Day is observed on June 19. The day aims to raise awareness about the fatal illness. It also focuses on the challenges faced by those who suffer from it.
The United Nations General Assembly declared World Sickle Cell Day in 2008 to promote awareness of sickle cell illness. As a result, on June 19, 2009, World Sickle Cell Day was commemorated for the first time.
The World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2024 theme is 'Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally'.

International Day for Countering Hate Speech

On June 18 countries around the world observe the International Day for Countering Hate Speech. This important day aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of hate speech and promote strategies to identify, address, and counter it.
In July 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech," highlighting global concerns over the "exponential spread and proliferation of hate speech.
This year's (2024) theme, 'The Power of Youth for Countering and Addressing Hate Speech', highlights the crucial role that young people play in fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society. The United Nations recognizes that hate speech, which targets and dehumanizes individuals based on their identity, is on the rise worldwide, spreading rapidly through social media platforms.

Autistic Pride Day

Autistic Pride Day is observed annually on June 18, and this year.
Autistic Pride Day was first celebrated in 2005 by Aspies For Freedom (AFF), who chose June 18 to honour the birthday of the group's youngest member at that time. AFF modelled the celebration after the gay pride movement.
The theme for Autistic Pride Day 2024 is 'Taking the Mask Off'.

International Day of Family Remittances

Every year on June 16 is observed as International Day of Family Remittances, a day dedicated to recognizing the significant contributions of over 200 million migrants who send money back home to support their families.
The theme for International Day of Family Remittances 2024 is 'Digital remittances towards financial inclusion and cost reduction'.

Father's Day

Father's Day observed on the third Sunday of June, holds great significance worldwide as it recognizes the invaluable contributions of fathers in our lives. This year (2024) it is observed on June 16.
Its origin can be traced back to the early 20th century in the US and the credit for recognising the day goes to Sonora Smart Dodd, who hailed from Spokane in Washington. After getting inspired by Mother's Day, the lady came up with the idea of honouring her father- William Jackson Smart, a Civil War Veteran- who single-handedly raised 6 of his children after his mother's demise.
