 New Opposition Leader in Maharashtra Assembly

  •  Senior Congress legislator Vijay Wadettiwar was appointed the new Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. The announcement was made by state Assembly speaker Haribhau Bagade in the lower house.
  • In April 2019, senior Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil had resigned from the post. On June 4, 2019, he resigned as a Congress MLA and was inducted as cabinet minister in the BJP-led state government.
  • Wadettiwar, a former Shiv Sena Sena leader, joined the Congress with former chief minister Narayan Rane. He is known for being an aggressive leader and comes from Chandrapur district in Vidarbha.
  • Congress had recently appointed Wadettiwar as group leader in the state Assembly after which both Congress and NCP jointly recommended his name for the post of leader of opposition.

New Director General of Indian Coast Guard

  •  Krishnaswamy Natarajan was appointed as the next Director General of the Indian Coast Guard replacing Rajendra Singh, who was the first cadre officer to head the force.
  • Natarajan, the second Coast Guard officer to lead the force, would take over on June 30. He joined the force in January 1984, and holds a Masters Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Madras University.
  • Natarajan has held various important Command and Staff appointments, both afloat and ashore.

New White House Press Secretary

  •  Stephanie Grisham, Melania Trump's communications director, would replace Sarah Huckabee Sanders as White House press secretary, continuing the ascent of a former campaign aide who established herself as a loyal and at times combative defender of the Trump family.
  • Ms. Grisham would also take on the added role of communications director, a job that has been vacant since the departure of Bill Shine in March, 2019, and would keep her role in the East Wing.

Saudi Arabia's New U.S. Ambassador

  •  Saudi Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan has a daunting task as she prepares to take up her role as the kingdom's ambassador to Washington with relations at their lowest point since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
  • Princess Reema, the daughter of former Ambassador to the US Bandar bin Sultan, renowned as one of the most influential Saudi envoys during his 22 years in Washington, the princess arrives with a deep knowledge of US politics and culture and a reputation as an advocate for women's rights.

Madan Lal Saini Passes Away

  • BJP's Rajasthan unit president Madan Lal Saini died in New Delhi. He was shifted from Jaipur to Delhi for treatment of blood-related ailment after being diagnosed with infection in the lungs. Mr. Saini, also a Rajya Sabha MP, was 75.

E. Sreedharan Resigns

  •  E. Sreedharan resigned as principal advisor of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC). Sreedharan, popularly known as Metro Man. Sreedharan sent his resignation to LMRC Managing Director Kumar Keshav, who forwarded the resignation letter to state government for final approval.
  • It is to be noted that another senior officer of LMRC, Mahender Kumar, who is currently the Director of Rolling Stock, is also set to leave the LMRC on June 30, 2019.
  • It may be recalled that Sreedharan had earlier offered to resign in 2017 too but at that time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had refused to accept his resignation and had in fact given him the responsibility to plan metros for three more cities including Varanasi, Agra and Meerut as well as his home turf Gorakhpur.

Former Tamil Nadu DGP Passes Away

  •  Former Tamil Nadu DGP V. R. Lakshminarayanan, who arrested the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a corruption case in 1977, died.
  • He was 91 and is survived by a son and two daughters.
  • Lakshminarayanan, fondly known as VRL, was a 1951 batch IPS officer.
  • He began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Madurai and then rose to become the Joint Director of Central Bureau of Investigation.
  • Lakshminarayanan had worked under various Prime Ministers including late Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Charan Singh, Morarji Desai.
  • Lakshminarayanan retired in 1985 as a Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu.

Viral Acharya Quits RBI

  •  Viral Acharya, deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, resigned six months before his term ends.
  • Acharya, who was in charge of monetary policy, would return to New York University as an economics professor in August instead of February 2020.
  • He took office at the RBI in January 2017 for a three-year term. His departure follows Urjit Patel's sudden resignation in December last year (2018) amid rising tension between the central bank and the government about the RBI's independence.
  • Shaktikanta Das was appointed governor shortly after Patel quit, with the RBI reversing its tight monetary policy stance since then.

Trump Picks Esper

  •  President Donald Trump nominated Mark Esper as the permanent defence secretary and also announced other senior-level appointments to bring stability at the Pentagon at a time when it is confronted with a potentially escalating military conflict with Iran.
  • Trump had named Esper acting defence secretary earlier after Patrick Shanahan, the then nominee for the permanent position, withdrew citing family issues.
  • Esper's eventual appointment for the Pentagon top job will need to be confirmed by the US Senate, which is a time-consuming process and could be one of the factors determining the timing of the next India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue.

Nanavati is RP for RCom

  •  The bankruptcy tribunal approved the appointment of Aneesh Nanavati of Deloitte as the resolution professional (RP) for Reliance Communications and its two subsidiaries — Reliance Telecom and Reliance Infratel.
  • According to RCom's own admission, financial creditors had made claims worth Rs. 57,382 crore from RCom and its two subsidiaries as of June 16.
  • The committee of creditors informed the tribunal that all the three companies had unanimously chosen Mr. Nanavati as the RP, as the nature of business of all the three entities are inter-connected.
