Irrfan Khan passes away in Mumbai

  • Bollywood and Hollywood actor Irrfan Khan has passed away at the age of 54.
  • Irrfan Khan is known for a range of successful films and his performances in them, such as Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Haider, Piku, Hindi Medium, among others. He was also part of Hollywood outings such as Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, Inferno, Jurassic World, The Amazing Spider-Man, etc.

Michael Robinson dead at 61

  • Former Liverpool striker Michael Robinson has died at the age of 61.
  • The former Ireland international, who won a league, League Cup and European Cup treble with Liverpool in the 1983-84 season, also played for Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers before ending his career with Spain's Osasuna.

  • US President Donald Trump has nominated senior Indian-American diplomat Manisha Singh as America's next envoy to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development or OECD.
  • Manisha Singh, 49, is currently Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs at the State Department.
  • Headquartered in Paris, France, the OECD is an intergovernmental economic organisation with 36 member countries to stimulate economic progress and world trade.

Ex-Andhra Bank Chief Suresh N Patel took over as Vigilance Commissioner

  • Former Andhra Bank chief Suresh N Patel took over as the vigilance commissioner in the anti-corruption watchdog CVC.
  • The post of vigilance commissioner has been lying vacant for over 10 months.
  • He was appointed the managing director and chief executive officer of Andhra Bank in November 2015 till his superannuation on December 31, 2017.

Dipankar Datta sworn in as CJ of Bombay High Court

  • Justice Dipankar Datta (55) of the Calcutta High Court was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. 
  • He was sworn in at Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. They were all wearing masks and maintaining social distance at the ceremony that was streamed live online.
  • Justice Datta is the 45th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

RBI Extends Madhavan Menon's Term As Part-Time Chairman of CSB Bank

  • CSB Bank said the Reserve Bank of India has extended the term of appointment of Madhavan Menon as the part-time Chairman of the Bank till July 21, 2020.
  • The private sector bank, formerly known as The Catholic Syrian Bank, in a regulatory filing said, the extension is in terms of Section 10B (1A)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • Menon was appointed as part-time Chairman of CSB Bank for a period of one year with effect from April 22, 2019. He is Chairman and Managing Director of Thomas Cook (India) Ltd.

Veteran Congress Leader Devanand Konwar, former Bihar and Tripura Governor, Dies At 86

  • Former Governor of Bihar and Tripura and veteran Congress leader Devanand Konwar died of old age ailments at his Guwahati residence.
  • He was governor of Bihar from July 24, 2009 to March 8, 2013 and of Tripura between March 25, 2013 and June 29, 2014.

Swedish Author Dies At The Age Of 85

  • One of Sweden's best-known authors, Per Olov Enquist, has died aged 85.
  • His career spanned more than half a century, and his work won acclaim not just in his native country but across Europe, especially France and Germany.
  • Enquist's plays and novels - described as pessimistic in their outlook - often deal with questions of truth, and the blurred lines between fact and fiction.The film Pelle the Conqueror, whose screenplay he helped write, won an Oscar for best foreign-language film.

Former IAS officer Sanjay Kothari takes oath as CVC

  •  Retired IAS officer Sanjay Kothari, who was secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind, took oath as the new Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).
  • Kothari, an officer from the 1978 batch from Haryana, was named as new CVC by a high powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February, 2020. In the same meeting, ex-Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka was appointed as the next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

Eminent theatre actor Usha Ganguly passes away at 75

  • Eminent theatre personality Usha Ganguly died at her residence in south Kolkata.
  • She founded the Rangakarmee group in 1976, which is known for non-conformist productions like 'Mahabhoj','Rudali', 'Court Martial' and 'Antaryatra'.
  • Her Rangakarmee gave a separate idiom, a new language to theatre in Bengal and created a new audience, which had so far been familiar with Bengali group theatre and English theatre, in the late 70s and 80s.
