  • Noted women's rights activist Sonal Shukla died after cardiac arrest in Mumbai. She was 80.
  • Shukla was the founder and managing trustee of the Vacha Charitable Trust and worked with adolescent girls and women for four decades.
  • Popularly known as Sonal Ben, Shukla was the co-founder of the group 'Forum Against Rape', now known as the 'Forum Against Oppression of Women'.

Keshav Desiraju, Former Union Health Secretary, Passes Away

  • Keshav Desiraju, former Union Health Secretary and grandson of former President S. Radhakrishnan passed away. He was 66.
  • Desiraju was an IAS officer from the 1978 batch of Uttarakhand cadre. He had a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
  • He has held many positions with the governments of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India and retired as the Union Secretary in the Department of Consumer Affairs. After he retired, he was appointed as the chairperson of the governing board of the Population Foundation of India.
  • Tamil Nadu chief minister M. K. Stalin expressed grief over Desiraju's death.

Former RS Member Chandan Mitra Passes Away

  • Veteran journalist and former Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra died after a long ailment. He was 65.
  • Mitra did a stint in various newspapers, including the Times of India and Hindustan Times, in his long career as a journalist before he became the Editor of The Pioneer.
  • Mitra started his journalism career with The Statesman in Kolkata. He joined The Pioneer, which he headed editorially for around 24 years, after stints at The Times of India, Sunday Observer and Hindustan Times newspapers.
